Japanese Olympic Trials Day Three Preview

Japan's Olympic trials, National Championships and National U20 Championships, continue Saturday in Niigata at Denka Big Swan Stadium. Live results will be here. The schedule:

Finals

Men's Discus Throw Final 12:15

No Japanese men are in range of making the Olympic team, so this is strictly a national-level competition with last year's winner Yuji Tsutsumi looking to hold off Shinichi Yukinaga and Masateru Yugami to repeat. Only Yukinaga has thrown over 60 m this season, and his 62.52 puts him only 7 cm behind Tsutsumi's career best.

Shinichi Yukinaga (Shikoku Univ. AC) - 62.52 m SB / PB
Masateru Yugami (Toyota) - 59.31 m SB / 62.16 m PB
Yuji Tsutsumi (Alsok) - 59.07 m SB / 62.59 m PB
Hiroki Kitahara (Niigata Iryo Fukushi Univ.) - 57.24 m SB / PB
Kosei Yamashita (Kyushu Kyoritsu Univ.) - 55.68 m SB / PB
Koshiro Fujiwara (Kyushu Kyoritsu Univ.) - 55.32 SB / PB

Men's Pole Vault Final 14:50

Likewise in the men's pole vault, Paris is out of range. It's a pretty close competition between the top 6 though, with top 3 Shingo Sawa and Tomoya Karasawa having the edge in recent competition. A comeback performance from Masaki Ejima could make it interesting.

Shingo Sawa (Kiraboshi Ginko) - 5.60 m SB / 5.61 m PB
Seito Yamamoto (Toyota) - 5.60 m SB / 5.77 m PB
Tomoya Karasawa (Nittai Univ.) - 5.56 m SB / 5.60 m PB
Koki Kuruma (Striders AC) - 5.50 m SB / 5.60 m PB
Kosei Takekawa (Marumoto Shogyo) - 5.50 m SB / 5.70 m PB
Masaki Ejima (Fujitsu) - 5.50 m SB / 7.71 m PB

Men's Long Jump Final 16:10

Yuki Hashioka cleared the Olympic standard with an 8.28 m (+1.4) jump in Florida in March, and as the only Japanese man in the quota right now is pretty much guaranteed to be on the Paris team. But Hiromichi Yoshida was only 1 cm off the standard at 8.26 m and defending national champ Shotaro Shiroyama has jumped 8.40 m before, so there's an outside chance Hashioka won't be alone. #2-ranked Yuto Toriumi would need an improvement on his 8.11 m PB to break into the top 32 worldwide.

Yuki Hashioka (Fujitsu) - 8.28 m SB / 8.36 m PB
Hiromichi Yoshida (Gulliver) - 8.26 m SB / PB
Keito Yamaura (Katsuura Golf Club) - 8.13 m SB / PB
Yuto Toriumi (Nojima T&F Club) - 8.07 m SB / 8.11 m PB
Hibiki Tsuha (Otsuka Seiyaku) - 8.07 m SB / 8.23 m PB
Tenju Togawa (Hashiri no Gakko) - 8.05 m SB / PB
Shintaro Shiroyama (Zenrin) - 8.01 m SB / 8.40 m PB

Men's Javelin Throw Final 16:35

Roderick Genki Dean is comfortably inside the Paris quota at 14th of 32, so he doesn't need to do much here to end up on the Olympic team. The next 2 best-ranked men Yuta Sakiyama and Ryohei Arai would need to throw in PB territory to make top 32, though. While the women may end up with a full count of 3 in the javelin throw, Dean will probably end up the only Japanese man.

Yuta Sakiyama (Ehime T&F Assoc.) - 83.54 m SB / PB
Ryohei Arai (Suzuki) - 83.37 m SB / 86.83 m PB
Roderick Genki Dean (Mizuno) - 83.15 m SB / 84.28 m PB
Hiroya Kiyokawa (Tokai Univ.) - 81.67 m SB / PB
Kenji Ogura (Agec Sports Management) - 80.13 m SB / 81.63 m PB
Yusaku Iwao (Tsukuba Univ.) - 80.09 m SB / PB

Women's 5000 m Final 17:55

The only final on the track on day 3, and it's going to be an interesting one. Fresh off hitting the 1500 m standard yesterday, Nozomi Tanaka already has the 5000 m standard and doesn't really need to do anything here to double in Paris, although it's unthinkable that she's not going to win easily. Kenyan pacer Judy Jepngetich is out. Yuma Yamamoto is at 36th of 42 in the Paris quota but hasn't been running well. 41st in the quota, Ririka Hironaka is injured and not running. That leaves the door open for one or two other Japanese women to make the cut. #4 Japanese woman Wakana Kabasawa needs to run 15:24.23 for 2nd to get to 42nd. #5 woman Rina Kusu needs to run 15:25.81 for 2nd. Both of them have run faster than that this season. If they both make top 42 and outrun Yamamoto, things will get very interesting in team selection.

Nozomi Tanaka (New Balance) - 14:47.69 SB / 14:29.18 PB
Wakana Kabasawa (Mitsui Sumitomo Denko) - 15:18.76 SB / PB
Tomoka Kimura (Sekisui Kagaku) - 15:21.60 SB / 15:02.48 PB
Rika Kaseda (Daihatsu) - 15:21.72 SB / 15:15.03 PB
Rino Goshima (Shiseido) - 15:22.33 SB / 15:13.53 PB
Rina Kusu (Sekisui Kagaku) - 15:23.89 SB / 15:10.91 PB
Yumi Yoshikawa (Uniqlo) - 15:24.36 SB / PB
Erika Tanoura (Sekisui Kagaku) - 15:24.37 SB / PB
Miyaka Sugata (Japan Post) - 15:25.81 SB / PB
Yuka Takashima (Shiseido) - 15:26.33 SB / PB
Yuma Yamamoto (Sekisui Kagaku) - 15:30.03 SB / 15:16.71 PB

Heats and Semifinals

Women's 100 mH Heats and Semis 13:00 / 17:15

One of Japan's big 4 is out, Masumi Aoki, but 2023 champion Asuka Terada, top-ranked Yumi Tanaka and NR holder Mako Fukube are all set to start. Tanaka is at 39th of 40 in the Paris quota and would move up a spot with the win in 13.17, 2nd in 13.03, 3rd in 12.95, or 4th in a 12.88 PB. Terada needs to win in a PB of 12.83 to get up to 40th. Fukube needs to hit the 12.77 standard, a time she's done before when she set the 12.73 NR in 2022. All three should make it through to Sunday's final without problem.

Asuka Terada (Japan Create) - 12.86 SB / PB
Yumi Tanaka (Fujitsu) - 12.89 SB / PB
Mako Fukube (NKK) - 12.90 SB / 12.73 PB
Chisato Kiyoyama (Ichigo) - 12.96 SB / PB
Yuki Omatsu (CDL) - 12.97 SB / PB
Hitomi Shimura (Rita Japan) - 13.00 SB / PB
Hikari Tanaka (Fujisan no Meisui) - 13.01 SB / PB
Hitomi Nakajima (Hasegawa) - 13.07 SB / PB
Manaka Shibata (Edion) - 13.08 SB / PB
Rei Honda (Juntendo Univ.) - 13.13 SB / PB

Men's 110 mH Heats and Semis 13:55 / 17:35

Top 3 Rachid Muratake, Shunsuke Izumiya and Shusei Nomoto all have the Paris standard, #4 man Shunya Takayama is in the quota on rankings, #5 man Taiga Yokochi is just outside it, and wildcard Ken Toyoda just set a National Championships meet record of 47.99 in the 400 mH. Even #6 Tatsuki Abe isn't far from the quota. If all of them make the final, and they should, it'll be another one of the best races at the Paris trials.

Rachid Muratake (JAL) - 13.04 SB / PB
Shusei Nomoto (Ehime T&F Assoc.) - 13.20 SB / PB
Shunya Takayama (Zenrin) - 13.25 SB / 13.10 PB
Ken Toyoda (Keio Univ.) - 13.29 SB / PB
Taiga Yokochi (Team SSP) - 13.33 SB / PB
Tatsuki Abe (Juntendo Univ.) - 13.35 SB / PB
Shuhei Ishikawa (Fujitsu) - 13.36 SB / PB
Ryota Fujii (Mie Sports Assoc.) - 13.41 SB / PB

Ryota Machi (Niigata Albirex RC) - 13.43 SB / PB

Men's 100 m Heats and Semis 14:30 / 18:20

Already having the Olympic standard, Abdul Hakim Sani Brown is sitting Nationals out, giving others the chance to score more points and join him in Paris. Hiroki Yanagita is in great shape this season with a 10.02 SB and a wind-aided 9.97 behind him. Shuhei Tada is out, leaving veteran Yoshihide Kiryu, last year's winner Ryuichiro Sakai, #4 Japanese man Akihiro Sakai and another sub-10 veteran, Yuki Koike, at the top of the list of contenders for the final.

Hiroki Yanagita (Toyo Univ.) - 10.02 SB / PB
Yoshihide Kiryu (Nihon Seimei) - 10.03 SB / 9.98 PB
Ryuichiro Sakai (Osaka Gas) - 10.08 SB / 10.02 PB
Akihiro Higashida (Sekisho) - 10.10 SB / PB
Yuki Koike (Sumitomo Denko) - 10.11 SB / 9.98 PB
Ryo Wada (Miki House) - 10.13 SB / 10.10 PB
Naoki Okami (Asunaro) - 10.15 SB / PB

Rikuto Higuchi (Suzuki) - 10.17 SB / PB
Ryota Suzuki (Suzuki) - 10.17 SB / PB

Women's 800 m Heats 15:25

High schooler Rin Kubo has been the most interesting thing in Japanese women's middle distance this season and has a pretty good chance of being a serious factor in the final. Nozomi Tanaka is scheduled to run the 800 m heats at a warmup for the 5000 m two and a half hours later, and she'll probably make it though to the final.

Airi Ikezaki (Daiso) - 2:03.08 SB / PB
Rin Kubo (Higashi Osaka Keiai H.S.) - 2:03.57 SB / PB
Ayano Shiomi (Iwatani Sangyo) - 2:03.67 SB / 2:02.57 PB

Yuki Hirota (Niigata Albirex RC) - 2:05.59 SB / 2:04.18 PB

Men's 800 m Heats 15:45

NR holder Sho Kawamoto will probably end up facing Penn State's Yukichi Ishii and others in the final, where a win by Ishii would join the U20 1500 m win by Ryo Higuchi, a student at the University of Kansas in middle distance wins coming out of American universities this year.

Sho Kawamoto (Suzuki) - 1:46.18 SB / 1:45.75 PB

Women's 400 mH Heats 16:10

Sumika Okawa (Waseda Univ.) - 58.12 SB / PB

Women's 200 m Heats 16:30

100 m national champ Arisa Kimishima will be looking to repeat on her 2023 win in the 200 m to make it a double, but Remi Tsuruta will be hoping for Paris. Tsuruta would need to win the final in 23.07 to overtake current Road to Paris rankings #48 Kristina Marie Knott of the Philippines. Tsuruta ran a wind-aided 23.06 in February, so that's not completely in the realm of the impossible. But first things first, the heats.

Shizuho Moriyama (Ichigo) - 23.84 SB / PB

Men's 400 m Heats 16:50

One of the events where Japan could send a complete squad of 3 to Paris, top 2 Kentaro Sato and Fuga Sato both having the Olympic standard and #3 Yuki Joseph Nakajima currently 43rd of 48.

Chepkirui Wins Nagoya Women's Marathon

Heavy-duty favorite Sheila Chepkirui took the win at Sunday's Nagoya Women's Marathon , pulling away after 30 km to cruise in for 1st in 2:20:40. Erratic pacing early saw the first and second groups only seconds apart for much of the first half of the race, the top group slower than planned and the 2nd group a bit ahead of schedule. At halfway in 1:10:37 the front group included Chepkirui, #2-ranked Ruti Aga and last year's runner-up Eunice Chumba , and Japanese contingent Sayaka Sato , Rika Kaseda , Natsuki Omori and Mao Uesugi . Omori was the first to drop, then Uesugi, then Aga, who ultimately dropped out before 30 km. When the pacers stopped at 30 km Chepkirui made a move that dropped Kaseda and strung out Chumba and Sato behind her, but all four came back together once before another surge put Kaseda away for good. As Chepkirui inched away Sato and Chumba passed each other repeatedly, and Chumba could only watch as the top Japanese runner got away from her again thi...

Nagoya Women's Marathon Preview

The Nagoya Women's Marathon , the world's largest women-only marathon and the last race in the selection cycle for September's Tokyo World Championships, happens Sunday. Weather conditions are looking better than what they had in Tokyo and Osaka the last two weekends, 7Ëš at the start and rising to 12Ëš with sunny skies. The wind looks a bit stronger than ideal, but it could be worse. Fuji TV has the live broadcast starting at 9:00 a.m. Sunday local time, and if you've got a VPN you should be able to watch the TVer streaming . One option for  a leaderboard is here , and another here . We'll have some coverage on @JRNLive . Just like last time around there are three Ethiopian and Kenyan-born athletes at the top list, this time it being sub-2:20 women Sheila Chepkirui , winner in NYC last year, and Ruti Aga , winner in Xiamen in January, and last year's Nagoya runner-up Eunice Chebichii Chumba . But last year Yuka Ando still pulled off the win, so there's a c...

Who's Running Tokyo Worlds?

The Japanese marathon teams will be the most prestigious ones to be on for September's Tokyo World Championships, and with Sunday's Nagoya Women's Marathon the window for Japanese athletes to get onto the JAAF's shortlist closed. Who's on it? The final decision won't be made until Mar. 26, but let's look through the selection criteria and see who's guaranteed, who's pretty likely, and who has a chance. 1. Marathon medalists at the Paris Olympics - There weren't any, so nobody makes the team this way. Akira Akasaki (Kyudenko) and Yuka Suzuki (Daiichi Seimei) were the top placers, both of them running PBs in the Olympics to finish 6th. You'd think that would count for something a year later, but you'd think wrong. 2. JMC Series IV Champions - The top point scorers in the Japan Marathon Championship Series IV, which ran from April, 2023 to March, 2025, earn places on the marathon teams along with cash prizes. For women that's Yuka ...
