Local Federation Takes Case of Osaka JHS Students Barred from Junior Olympics to Arbitration as Governor Yoshimura Steps In

On Oct. 5 the Osaka Junior High School Athletics Association held a meeting for parents and related parties to explain the situation surrounding 8 local Osaka boys and girls who were scheduled to represent the city at this month's JOC Junior Olympics U16 Track and Field Championships but were barred from competing due to mistakes with the entry process by OJHSAA officials . A spokesperson apologized to the parents, saying, "This situation was the result of inadequacies with our procedures and verification. The athletes have no responsibility for what happened at all, and we offer our sincerest apologies." According to OJHSAA officials, their staff member in charge of registering the Osaka team for the Junior Olympics mistakenly thought the deadline for entries was Sept. 28, not the actual deadline of 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 24. Osaka Team Barred from Junior Olympics After Entry Mixup by Local Association

A team of 8 athletes scheduled to represent Osaka at the JOC U16 Junior Olympics later this month in Mie will not be allowed to compete after officials at the local Osaka Junior High School Athletics Association failed to complete the entry process by the application deadline. According to an OJHSAA spokesperson, a total of 8 boys and girls were to compete in the Junior Olympics from Osaka, but the OJHSAA official responsible for handling team members' entries did not complete the entry process by the Sept. 24 deadline. The OJHSAA subsequently petitioned the JAAF to the accept the entries after the deadline, but the JAAF was reported to have denied the request. Ishida and Rakunan Break National Records at Junior Olympics

At the weekend's Junior Olympics in Yokohama's Nissan Stadium, Asakawa Junior High School 9th-grader Kosuke Ishida won in 8:17.84 to take almost 1.5 seconds off the 3000 m junior high school boys national record. A totally solo run in heavy rain, Ishida won by a margin of almost 16 seconds over his closest competition. The record followed his 1500 m junior high school national record of 3:49.72 at the Sept. 23 Nittai University Time Trials meet in Yokohama, cementing his position at the top of next year's incoming high school class.
