Japan's best university track meet happened the last 4 days in Tochigi at the 105th Kanto Region University Track and Field Championships . The race of the meet was without a doubt the D1 men's 3000 mSC, where Japanese U20 all-time #2 Tetsu Sasaki (Waseda University) and Sanetada Ono (Tokai Univ.) pushed each other to both break one of the oldest records in Japanese athletics, 10-mile NR holder Masanari Shintaku 's 8:35.2 Kanto Regionals meet record from 1977. Just starting his 2nd year at Waseda, Sasaki got the win and record in 8:24.96, landing just outside the all-time Japanese top 10. Ono took just over a second off his PB to go under Shintaku's old record too in 8:31.41 for 2nd. On the women's side the race of the meet was the D1 women's 5000 m. The National Sports Festival wrapped up Tuesday in Saga with one of the best races of the meet, the junior women's 3000 m. The top 5 all went under 9:00, with Daisy Jerop (Sendai Ikuei H.S.) dominating in 8:56.36. Sharon Mwanti (Yamanashi Gakuin H.S.) was 2nd in 9:01.65, with Mei Hokiyama (Yamada H.S.) close behind in 9:04.86 for 3rd, Rin Setoguchi (Kamikura Gakuen H.S.) 4th in 9:06.63 and Pauline Wanjuku (Teikyo Nagaoka H.S.) 5th in 9:09.36. All told the top 12 broke 9:30. The junior boys' 3000 m was almost as competitive. The National High School Ekiden happened Sunday in Kyoto, its 35th edition for girls and 74th for boys. With last year's 3rd-place Kamimura Gakuen H.S. set to run last year's anchor stage winner Caroline Kariba on anchor again, it was all about trying to open as much room as they could over the first four stages for girls' race favorites Sendai Ikuei H.S. and Ritsumeikan Uji H.S. Sendai Ikuei moved up from 3rd to 1st on the 4.0975 km 2nd leg thanks to a stage-winning run by Daisy Jerop and stayed there over the next two legs. Ritsumeikan Uji was in 2nd the entire way, closing the gap to Sendai Ikuei to 30 seconds by the end of the 4th leg after 3rd and 4th runners Nodoka Ashida and Yua Sato won their stages.
