This was one of the busiest weekends of the year for Japanese marathons, with at least five big races across the country. The fastest was the Kanazawa Marathon with a field of 13,000, with Kenta Fukumura winning for the second year in a row in 2:16:51 and Chifumi Ito  running an almost 9-minute PB of 2:34:45 to break the women's course record. At the 10,000-runner Mito Komon Manyu Marathon in Ibaraki, Japan-based Kenyan Benjamin Ngandu won in 2:19:10, the only man to go under 2:20. Kana Numata won the women's race in 2:46:09, Honoka Kurosaki taking 2nd in 2:48:24 and Akiko Maruichi 3rd in 2:49:48. A total of 6,847 people ran the Shimada Oigawa Marathon in Shizuoka. Shunsuke Matsui won the men's race in 2:22:34, with local Natsumi Yamauchi winning the women's race in 3:00:16. This was Japan's biggest marathon weekend since pre-pandemic, with at least four major races going off as scheduled. With 11,597 finishers the Kanazawa Marathon was the fastest of them. Last year's women's winner Mai Fujisawa , 48, ran her fastest time of her six certified marathons so far this year, winning again in 2:38:29. Erika Omi led 8 other women under 2:50, 2nd to Fujisawa in 2:42:55. The men's race was closer, with Kenta Fukumura edging last year's winner Junichi Ushiyama by 17 seconds to win in 2:16:20. 3rd-placer Hayato Sugimoto was the only other runner under 2:20, running 2:19:27. The Mito Komon Manyu Marathon in Ibaraki also saw a close men's race. On Apr. 16 the city government of Tsukuba, Ibaraki just northeast of Tokyo announced that along with two other events in August and September, it was canceling the 40th running of the Tsukuba Marathon scheduled for Nov. 22 due to the effects of the coronavirus crisis. Last year the Tsukuba Marathon had 11,461 finishers with winning times of 2:14:18 for men and 2:46:24 for women, with another 2,002 finishers in its accompanying 10 km. Tsukuba is the third October/November Japanese marathon with a field of around 10,000 to cancel in the last few weeks, following the Oct. 18 Chiba Aqualine Marathon and the Oct. 25 Mito Komon Manyu Marathon , also in Ibaraki. Set to stage its sixth edition this year, the Toyama Marathon has postponed opening entries. The race is scheduled to be held Nov. 1. Priority runner entries were to open on Apr. 11 with general division entries opening on Apr. 25. But with no official position established yet as to whether the race will go ahead amid the spread of the novel coronavirus, the prefectural government made the decision to postpone opening entries that require payment of entry fees. The prefecture currently plans to open entries sometime in early May, with further information to be announced on the race website. At the same time, the organizing committee of the Nov. 8 Fukuoka Marathon 's seventh edition likewise announced on Apr. 9 that they were postponing opening entries and volunteer recruitment due to the coronavirus situation. Notification of Cancelation of the 5th Mito Komon Manyu Marathon In view of the evolving situation surrounding the spread of the novel coronavirus both domestically and abroad, on Apr. 9 the organizing committee of the 5th Mito Komon Manyu Marathon has decided to cancel this year's race scheduled for October 25. Prior to the decision to cancel, key issues were explored from a variety of angles, including whether it would be possible to set up medical services and whether recruiting volunteers would be feasible. The result of these discussions was that along with the likelihood of increased risk of infection for participants, it was determined that it would not likely be possible to safely organize or conduct the race, and that the best of course of action would be to cancel this year's event prior to the opening of entries. With the 22nd typhoon of the season hitting Japan's eastern coast, five of Japan's biggest amateur marathons faced the decision of whether to go ahead as scheduled. The biggest of them, the third running of the  Yokohama Marathon , 10th largest in the world last year with 22,594 finishers, was the only one to cancel, a controversial decision that went out Saturday evening ahead of milder-than-expected conditions on race morning.
