Former NR Holder Shitara Runs Best Half in 5 Years, Ando Repeats at Osaka Half

In parallel with the Osaka International Women's Marathon , Sunday's Osaka Half Marathon had some big names come out on top in both the women's and men's races. Last year Yuka Ando outran Ethiopian Desta Burka by 2 seconds to set a CR of 1:08:18. Running with a personal male pacers this time Ando went out to better that, on track for 1:08:00 at 5 km and dipping into sub-68 territory over the next 5 km. But after that she started to fade, and especially from 20 km to the finish at least a half dozen other women split faster. Still, she was far enough out front to take the win in 1:08:57, with corporate leaguers Sakiho Tsutsui and Mizuki Nishimura taking 2nd and 3rd in 1:09:29 and 1:09:49. Osaka also served as the Kansai Region collegiate half marathon championships, and the winner of this season's Morinomiyako Ekiden and Mt. Fuji Women's Ekiden , Kyoto's Ritsumeikan University , came out strong. The back half of its Mt. Fuji national title-winning li...

Weekend Road and Track Roundup

It was the busiest weekend so far this year in Japanese road racing. At the National Corporate Half Marathon and 10 km Championships , Joseph Karanja (Aichi Seiko) took the men's title in 1:00:25, leading 11 under 61 minutes. 3rd overall, Ryota Kondo (Mitsubishi Juko) was the top Japanese man in 1:00:32. Depth-wise it was pretty typical for a top-level Japanese half: sub-61: 11 sub-62: 26 sub-63: 46 sub-64: 78 sub-65: 93 sub-66: 106 After a CR and women-only NR last year the women's race was unexpectedly slow this time. 2022 champ Dolphine Nyaboke Omare (U.S.E.) made it two in a row with an easy solo win in 1:10:16, with Shiori Yoshizono (Tenmaya) 2nd in 1:10:48. Sora Shinozakura (Panasonic) won the women's 10 km title in 33:09. At the Karatsu 10-Miler , marathoner Hiroto Fujimagari (Toyota Kyushu) held off  Hideaki Sumiyoshi (Kyudenko) for the win 46:56 to 46:58. Naruha Sato (Shiseido) won the women's 10 km, bettering Shinozakura's time at the National ...

Chicago Marathon Japanese Results

Runner-up at last year's Fukuoka International Marathon, Kyohei Hosoya was the top Japanese finisher at the Chicago Marathon Sunday. Hosoya went through halfway in the 2nd pack in 1:03:46 en route to a 2:08:05 for 6th. Riki Nakanishi was the only other Japanese man under 2:10, barely, finishing 14th in 2:09:59. Hiroto Fujimagari and Kiyoshi Koga were less successful, Fujimagari 20th in 2:13:04 and Koga 23rd in 2:13:42. Koki Ozawa just made it under 2:20 in an apparent marathon debut, running 2:19:54 for 40th. Sub-2:10 man Masaya Taguchi dropped out after 25 km, hitting halfway in 1:05:10 but abruptly slowing after that. Club runner Tomomi Nakajima was the top Japanese woman to finish, 55th in 2:47:23. © 2022 Brett Larner, all rights reserved

Nishiyama Runs World-Leading 2:07:47 CR to Win Debut at Beppu-Oita Marathon

A few years back the Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon reworked its course to try to minimize the headwinds for which it's famous. In its 70th running today that paid off more than ever before, with 25~30 kph winds from the northwest keeping things controlled in the first 10 km and then giving enough of a boost to the pace from there to 35 km to help put the top two under the course record of 2:08:01. Straight into the wind over the first 10 km the race went out reasonably, 2:08:16 pace through 5 km and 2:08:37 pace through 10 km. But after rounding the 10 km turnaround and picking up the tailwind things got faster, a sub-15 split over the next 5 km taking the projected finish time to mid-2:07 and going down as far as 2:07:12 before the last pacers stepped off at 30 km. At that point there were still over a dozen people left in the lead group, most of them debuting or doing a first serious marathon and only a few experienced athletes like #1-ranked Shuho Dairokuno (Asahi Kasei) and H...
