At around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 22 during the Sapporo Toyohiragawa Trial Marathon on a cycling course in Sapporo's Minami Ward, 32-year-old amateur runner Saeki Makino , 32, of Warabi, Saitama collided with a pedestrian, local resident Toshiko Ishiyama , 82, who was walking on the course. Ishiyama was knocked down, sustaining serious injuries including a broken left wrist. With an absence of course markings leaving the course freely open for pedestrians to enter it, Minami Ward police are examinig the organizers' operations. Running 1:05:45, Kawauchi lost to training partner and fellow amateur Saeki Makino (DNPL). "Things have been hectic since Boston and that's had an impact on me," Kawauchi said ruefully. On a quiet weekend between the end of Japan's road season and the start of track season, three minor road races saw noteworthy results from university runners across the country.  Just two weeks after outkicking 2009 World Half Marathon Championships bronze medalist Dathan Ritzenhein  (U.S.A.) to run a 1:01:48 PB at the NYC Half Marathon, Yuta Shitara (Toyo Univ.) marked the first day of his junior year by beating popular marathoner Yuki Kawauchi (Saitama Pref.) by 44 seconds at the Satta Sakura 10-Miler in Saitama.  Aoyama Gakuin University's Naohisa Matsuda likewise had a big win at the Nihondaira Sakura Road Race, setting a new record of 1:12:22 for the tough 23 km course featuring a nearly 300 m uphill. by Brett Larner With four months to go until the 2011 World Championships men's marathon in Daegu, Korea, the last few days saw the three 2:09 men on Japan's team racing 10000 m on the track, Yoshinori Oda (Team Toyota) running 28:24.59 at the May 1 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational and Hiroyuki Horibata (Team Asahi Kasei) and Kentaro Nakamoto (Team Yasukawa Denki) setting PBs of 28:30.32 and 29:04.24 at the May 3 Nobeoka Spring Time Trials.
