Marugame Half Marathon Elite Field (updated)


The elite field has been announced for the Feb. 1 Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon. The women's race has a good matchup up front between 2 of the stars of last year's race, Dolphine Omare and Isobel Batt-Doyle, and British duo Eilish McColgan and Charlotte Purdue. The current #1 woman in Japanese collegiate athletics, Daito Bunka University's Sarah Wanjiru, and sub-15 5000 m runner Susan Kamotho who has yet to run even 10000 m are interesting debuts, with Japanese hopes pretty much resting on Tokyo World Championships marathon team members Yuka Ando and Kana Kobayashi.

Last year's runner-up Emmanuel Maru is the favorite in the men's race, but right behind him there's a tasty duel between collegiate half marathon record co-holders Richard Etir and Kotaro Shinohara. Past Fukuoka International Marathon winner Sondre Moen, Dennis Kipruto, Yuma Nishizawa and Josphat Ledama Kisaisa round out the front end of the field.

The relocation of the National University Men's Half Marathon from Tachikawa to Marugame last year had a profound impact on the level of collegiate men's times, with Shinohara going sub-60, 14 other university men running 60 minutes, and 37 more running 61 minutes. Along with the now-graduated Shinohara, 5 of the 60-minute men from last year, Kento Baba, Hiro Konda, Hiromichi Nonaka, Hikaru Tsujihara and Haru Taninaka, are back, and with around 30 collegiate runners with sub-62 PBs entered this time expect a lot more to join the sub-61 club too.

Incheon Asian Games - Long Distance Preview

With over half the world's population represented making it the biggest of the world's regional championships, track and field events kick off September 27 at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.  It's a reality of the region that Bahrain and Qatar field distance teams virtually entirely made up of Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes who duly take home most of the medals, but with Japan hosting the 2020 Olympics it is not screwing around, sending its best talent to what Japanese broadcaster TBS is hyping as "The Asian Olympics." Ichiyama and Kipkoech Win Sapporo Olympic Test Event Half Marathon

The test event for the Tokyo Olympics marathon went off as planned May 5 in Sapporo on a course more or less mirroring the first half of this summer's Olympic course. Strong winds from the south meant a slow start over the first 8 km, super fast splits from the turn to the north just before 10 km until after 15 km, and a technical finish into the wind over the narrow and winding last few km through the Hokkaido University campus. After a slow first km, Olympic marathon women's team members Ayuko Suzuki (Japan Post) and Mao Ichiyama  (Wacoal) plus alternate Mizuki Matsuda (Daihatsu) took it out hard with pacing courtesy of one of Ichiyama's male coaches. They stayed together on 1:08 pace until almost 18 km before Suzuki slipped away, Ichiyama kicking to win in a 1:08:28 PB and Matsuda closing hard in 1:08:32 for 2nd, likewise a PB.
