Asahi Kasei Outkicks Honda to Win New Year Ekiden


No big surprises at the New Year Ekiden, where 2025 kicked off with a battle between favorites Toyota, Honda and Asahi Kasei that came down to a sprint finish in the last 800 m of the 7-leg, 100 km race.

2017-2020 New Year Ekiden winner Asahi Kasei took the lead from the start with an opening leg win by Sonata Nagashima. On the longest leg, the 21.9 km Second Stage, Yuto Imae from the team most expected to challenge the big three, GMO, made it to the front, but with a great run from Tomoki Ota the defending champs Toyota took the lead on the Third Stage. Samuel Kibathi held on over the short Fourth Leg, but on the Fifth Leg Yusuke Nishiyama showed fatigue from his 2:06:54 at Fukuoka a month ago and was run down by Olympic steepler Ryoma Aoki from 2022-2023 New Year winner Honda and Asahi Kasei's Shuho Dairokuno.

Looking very strong over a longer distance than he'd usually run, Aoki opened a 10-second lead on Dairokuno that Honda's 6th runner Toru Kubota turned into 12 by the final exchange. Anchor Ken Nakayama had brought Honda home in its 2023 win and ran with determination and focus on CR pace, but in his debut after graduating from Waseda University Asahi Kasei's Ryuto Igawa, 27:39.05 for 10000 m in November, wasn't going to let Nakayama get away.

Igawa quickly made up the 12-second difference and tucked in right behind Nakayama. Nakayama did all the work of battling the headwinds blowing in from the mountains, but Igawa stayed calm and impassive, and even a surge with 2 km to go couldn't shake him. From 800 m out Igawa went on the attack, blasting away and opening an incredible 20 seconds on Nakayama. Both broke the 15.6 km anchor stage CR by over 2 minutes, Igawa in 45:52 and Nakayama 46:12, and when Igawa hit the finish tape it meant a return to the top for the old school powerhouse Asahi Kasei for the first time in 5 years, 4:47:32 for the complete 100.0 km course.

Honda was 2nd again in 4:47:40, with Toyota dropping about a minute behind but hanging on to 3rd in 4:48:36. One-time leader GMO spent most of the race in 4th and finished there in 4:50:33, with local heroes Subaru outleaning Sumitomo Denko for 5th, both clocking 4:51:21. Mitsubishi Juko and Fujitsu rounded out the 8-deep podium in 4:51:48 and 4:52:24.

Standout individual performances included the New Year Ekiden debut of 3000 mSC NR holder Ryuji Miura for Subaru, 3rd on the opening leg in 34:31 and of 2024 Komazawa University captain Mebuki Suzuki for Toyota, 2nd on the 21.9 km Second Stage in 1:02:03, and comeback runs for Kazuki Tamura of Sumitomo Denko, 1st on the 15.3 km Third Stage in 42:58 and for Hakone Ekiden 2nd, 3rd and 4th leg CR holder Vincent Yegon with a win on the 7.6 km Fourth Stage in 20:37.

The performance of the day came from Kao's Yohei Ikeda, 2:05:12 in Berlin in September, who dominated the Second Stage with a 1:01:48 for 21.9 km, 59:33 half marathon pace. With an organized assault on the 1:00:00 half marathon NR on deck at Marugame in February and a home soil World Championships on the horizon, this year's New Year Ekiden showed that there are a lot of good things just around the corner in 2025.

So glad that Takeda Yakuhin, 20 minutes behind the closest finisher, was in this race. If JAAF/JITA was smart they would have a "Halloween Ekiden" or something like that to mirror the Princess Ekiden, they get another TV race out of it and it would actually be competitive unlike Kyushu where 9 teams raced for 9 spots, Chubu 7 teams for 7 spots, Hokuriku 2 teams for 2 spots, and Chugoku 4 teams for 5 spots.

This was maybe the most entertaining marathon in years. After rocking the 2nd leg at last year's Hakone Ekiden Hibiki Yoshida (Sunbelx) ran an incredible 1:01:01 CR for the 21.9 km New Year Ekiden 2nd leg last month, equivalent to a 58:47 half marathon. That predicted a 2:03:27 marathon if he ever ran one, and when Yoshida announced he was debuting at this year's Osaka Marathon he wasted no time in saying it'd be a shot at the 2:04:55 NR. He clearly DGAF about what was probably going to happen as his projected finish kept getting faster, 2:04:41, 2:04:15, 2:03:51, 2:03:40, edging closer and closer to what his New Year time predicted, but not helped along by the fact that he missed 4 out of his first 5 drink bottles. Osaka Marathon Preview

The Osaka Marathon is Sunday, one of Japan's biggest mass-participation races and the next stop on the calendar for its elite marathoners hoping to qualify for the L.A. Olympics marathon trials in the fall of 2027. Last year it snowed mid-race, but this year is looking warmer than ideal given the season, with sunny skies, almost no wind, and temps forecast to be 11˚ at the start and rising to 19˚ by the time the winners are finishing. NHK is broadcasting Osaka with a heavy emphasis on the men's race, and if you've got a VPN you should be able to watch it from overseas. There's also official streaming on Youtube starting at 8:30 a.m. local time, although it doesn't look like it's the same as what NHK will be showing. Arao Becomes 1st Man in 40 Years to Score Back-to-Back Ome Road Race Wins

30 km is an under-appreciated distance, and both of Japan's big races at that distance happened Sunday. At the Ome Road Race in western Tokyo's mountains, Sydney Marathon 6th-placer Masato Arao (ND Software) became the first man since the great Kunimitsu Ito in 1985-1986 to win back-to-back years. Arao, who finished 39th of 40 on his leg at the New Year Ekiden last month, stayed in the pack through 20 km before going on the attack, putting over a minute on New Year Ekiden Sixth Stage CR breaker Yudai Shimazu (GMO). Sub-1:31 winning times are rare on the tough and hilly Ome course, but Arao's 1:30:54 almost equaled his 1:30:50 from last year, making him the first Japanese man ever to do it twice and second only to CR holder Ezekiel Cheboitibin .
