Honoka Akiyama had the best performance by a Japanese athlete at the 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, running as high as 5th in the women's 80 km long race, dropping to 13th near halfway, then coming back to take 9th in 12:01:23. Ignoring early front-running by his teammates, Koken Ogasawara started around 50th and moved up progressively through the field to finish as the top Japanese man in 30th in 11:04:57. Silver two years ago , Japanese NR holder Jumpei Yamaguchi took gold at the IAU 100 km World Championships Saturday in Bengaluru, India.
