Matsuo Breaks High School Half Marathon Record in 1:02:47


At the 48th Kanagawa Half Marathon at Yokohama's Nissin Olio Group's Isogo Plant, Jinya Ozaki (Teikyo Univ.) outran tough competition from National University Ekiden champion Komazawa University and Hakone Ekiden winner Aoyama Gakuin University to take 1st in the men's race in 1:02:04. AGU's Sho Fukutomi was 2nd in 1:02:07, with Komazawa's Rinta Muta 3rd in 1:02:08. High schooler Nichika Maeda (Miura Gakuen H.S.) took the women's race in 1:16:30.

But it was another high schooler who made headlines. 3rd-year Koki Matsuo (Shiritsu Funabashi H.S.) ran 1:02:47, taking 28 seconds off the fastest half marathon time ever run by a Japanese-born high school student. Last summer Matsuo ran the 5000 m at the National High School Track and Field Championships, and in November he went under 14 minutes for 5000 m, his time of 13:55.07 putting him into the top class of high school running.

At last fall's Chiba Prefectural High School Ekiden Matsuo set a new CR of 24:06 to win the 8.0875 km Fourth Stage. At December's National High School Ekiden he was assigned the most competitive stage, the 10.0 km opening leg, where he ran an excellent 28:54 for 4th to demonstrate his abilities on the road.

At the Kanagawa Half Matsuo went out in the lead group of collegiate runners, hitting 10 km in 29:33. He faded in the 2nd half but managed to hang to finish 17th overall in 1:02:47, cracking the 3:00/km barrier to better the 1:03:15 record set by Yuta Minamisaka (Kurashiki H.S.) in 2023.

The high school girls' half marathon record also nearly went down, but at a different race. At Ibaraki's Moriya Half Marathon, Anna Szbrucek (Ushiku H.S.) debuted in 1:13:33, just short of the 1:12:06 record set in 2017 by Yuka Kato (Toki Shogyo H.S.). Born in Japan to Slovakian and Bulgarian parents, Szbrucek holds the 2000 mSC and 3000 mSC high school records.

The men's race in Moriya was a group run by Chuo Gakuin University, Kota Yoneda leading his team in 1:04:15. CGU runners took 9 of the top 10 spots, with only Sota Takeichi (Ryutsu Keizai Univ.) breaking up the party in 1:04:58 for 9th.

Great stuff by Matsuo though we know not to raise too much expectations after we saw how college careers are different and some talents don't fully bloom (see Yoshioka and Ishida). Great potential there though.

What is scary is the depth that once again AGU shows with depth runners running low 62s and with a few those of being first years too.
Encouraging for Komazawa as well since Muta is a debuting first year and Niitani will be there too next year. Chuo having a couple of guys in the mix too though I don't know what year they are.

Oh well, ekiden season won't come fast enough.

Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. Japan's Team for Nagoya Asian Games

The JOC announced the full lineups for the men's and women's teams for September's Nagoya Asian Games . Being hosted in Japan the Asian Games are a pretty big deal, and it's pretty close to the maximum of 2 athletes per event. The men's and women's triple jump, the women's 400 m and the women's discus throw only have 1 athlete on the Japanese team, and it's a big FU to the shot putters apparently as nobody was named to either the men's or women's teams even though people ranked lower in the World Athletics Asian rankings than top JPN shot putters Daichi Morishita and Chiharu Saka did make the team in other events. But, let's focus on what it is, not what it isn't. Going off this week's Asian rankings 8 men and 5 women are ranked #1 in their event, with a total of 19 men and 14 women ranked in the top 3. Factor in a limit of 2 per nationality and the relays and Japan's chances of scoring a great medal haul are looking good. M...

Australian YouTuber Handed Lifetime Ban by Ageo City Half Marathon After Running 1:06 with Another Runner's Bib (updated)

After discussion with their race's chief JAAF referee, on Nov. 27 the organizers of the Ageo City Half Marathon handed down a lifetime ban from their event against 36-year-old Australian Matt Inglis Fox  for running the Nov. 15 race wearing the bib number of another JAAF-registered runner. The incident came to light after Fox posted on his personal Instagram account that he had run a PB of 1:06:33 and finished 203rd in Ageo with a 10 km split of 31:03, along with photos and video of himself in the race wearing a bib number beginning with 11. Fox did not appear in the results by name or in that time or place, the closest match being a 1:06:54 gross, 1:06:50 net finish time with a 31:21 10 km split for 18th place in the JAAF-registered division and 209th overall by bib number 1129, registered to a non-Japanese Tokyo-resident club runner.
