High School Teacher Suspended for Sexually Harassing Member of Girls' Track Team

On Feb. 1 St. Catalina Gakuen H.S. in Matsuyama held a press conference to announce that a male member of its faculty has been suspended for 20 days for sexually harassing a girl on the school's track and field team. The girl's guardian filed a complaint with the school.

According to the school, since last November the girl has received massages from the male staff member after practice and began to feel uncomfortable with the way he touched her shoulders and other areas. Additionally, the girl complained that in December after she had sustained an injury, the man had held her hand while giving her words of support and encouragement as he drove her to receive treatment.

In January the same school suspended the 30-year-old male head coach of its girls' softball team for violating the school's sexual harassment and corporal punishment policies. The school's principal's salary was reduced and two other administration executives were officially reprimanded for being slow to notify the Board of Directors of the problems.

This weekend's big race is the Ageo City Half Marathon , the next stop on the collegiate men's circuit. Most of the universities bound for the Jan. 2-3 Hakone Ekiden use Ageo to thin down the list of contenders for their final Hakone rosters, and with JRN's development program that sends the first two Japanese collegiate finishers in Ageo to the United Airlines NYC Half every year a lot of coaches put in some of their A-listers too.
