Singh Breaks Indian NR to Win Hachioji Long Distance 10000 m, with 39 Going Sub-28

For the second time in two months Gulveer Singh was in Japan to race, and for the second time he outkicked Toyota corporate team rookie and 2023-2024 Komazawa University captain Mebuki Suzuki to win with a new Indian national record.

Last time around it was September's Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup 5000 m in Niigata, where Singh ran a 13:11.82 NR, outpowering Suzuki over the last 200 m but Suzuki still coming in with an all-time Japanese #8 13:13.80. This time it was the Hachioji Long Distance 10000 m time trial meet in suburban Tokyo. Running the fastest heat targeting the 27:00.00 Tokyo World Championships standard, Singh started at the back of the pack and worked his way forward as the race progressed. The front end of the pack wore down to just Singh, Suzuki and Japan-based Kenyans Samwel Masai (Kao), Gilbert Kiprotich (Sunbelx) and Emmanuel Kiplagat (Mitsubishi Juko), splitting en route:

2:42
5:25 (2:43)
8:08 (2:43)
10:51 (2:43)
13:36 (2:45)
16:19 (2:43)
19:04 (2:45)
21:50 (2:46)
24:38 (2:48)

It was never really on the target sub-27 pace, but once it dropped slower than sub-27:20 in the second half Suzuki went to the front multiple times to try to get it going again, Singh covering each move but never taking a turn up front. On the last lap Singh waited until the back straight to set up his attack, then went with 200 m. He clocked 2:36 for the last 1000 m, with a 57-second last lap and 26-second last 200 m to cross the line 1st in a new Indian NR of 27:14.88. It was the 8th-fastest time ever by an Asian and 4th-fastest by an athlete actually born in Asia.

Masai and Kiprotich were next in 27:17.78 and 27:19.35, with Suzuki just missing out on a sub-27:20 time but moving up to all-time Japanese #5 in 27:20.33. 5th through 7th all finished together in 27:45, with Suzuki's fellow Komazawa grad Ayumu Kobayashi running down Kiplagat and holding off Gideon Rono (Logisteed) in 27:45.01 for 5th.

The B-heat was also fast. With highly professional pacing from Amos Kurgat, Tomoya Ogikubo took the win in 27:38.28 with a long surge that opened just enough ground to hold off a fast-closing Ryuto Igawa (Asahi Kasei), who ended up 2nd in 27:39.05. Yuto Imae (GMO) continued a great season with a 27:42.65 for 3rd, with the rest of the top 10 all breaking 28 minutes.

The all-Kenyan C-heat where the few Japanese have usually run in past years had incredible depth if not truly top-tier times up front. In a 7-way sprint finish with only 1.60 seconds of separation Emmanuel Kiprop Kipruto (Asahi Kasei) took the win in 27:29.10, Evans Keitany (Toyota Boshoku) 2nd in 27:29.11 and Emmanuel Maru (Toyota Boshoku) 3rd in 27:29.33. The top 17 all broke 28 minutes. With this race serving as part of the decision-making process for coaches of teams with more than one non-Japanese athlete about who to run in the Jan. 1 New Year Ekiden national championship, where only one non-Japanese athlete is allowed per team, teammates Keitany and Maru finishing only 0.22 seconds apart showed how hard that decision can be.

And Hachioji wasn't even the only game in town. Along with time trials meets at Heisei Kokusai University on Saturday and Tokai University on Sunday, the MARCH Taikosen meet with Meiji University, Aoyama Gakuin University, Rikkyo University, Chuo University and Hosei University happened at the same time as Hachioji just down the road in Machida. In the fast heat there AGU's Masaya Tsurukawa ran a school record 27:43.33 for the win over Chuo's Shunsuke Yoshii, who also ran a school record in 27:44.48. Chuo's Hayate Honma and AGU's Asahi Kuroda both went under 27:50, with AGU's Hiroki Wakabayashi sneaking under 28 minutes in 27:59.53. That brought the total count for sub-28 performances for the night to 39 across the two meets.

In team scoring, the aggregate time of each school's top 10 finishers across the meet's four heats of 10000 m, Chuo was fastest in 4:43:37.02, an average of 28:21.71, with AGU close behind in 4:44:04.18, a 28:24.42 10-man average.

10000 m NR Attempt In the Works Saturday at Hachioji Long Distance - Streaming and Preview

There are a bunch of other time trial meets this weekend and next, but Saturday's Hachioji Long Distance is the last big meet for Japanese men, 8 heats of Wavelight-paced 10000 m finely graded from target times of 28:50 down to 26:59 for the fastest heat. Heat 6 at 17:55 local time is effectively the B-race, with 35 Japan-based Kenyans targeting 27:10 at the front end, and in a lot of cases a spot on their teams at the New Year Ekiden national championship on Jan. 1. Corporate teams are only allowed to field one non-Japanese athlete in the New Year Ekiden, and only on its shortest stage, and getting to that has a big impact on African athletes' contracts and renewal prospects. Toyota Boshoku , Yasukawa Denki , Chugoku Denryoku , Aisan Kogyo , JR Higashi Nihon , Subaru and 2024 national champion Toyota are all fielding two Kenyans, and Aichi Seiko three. For people like Toyota's Felix Korir and Samuel Kibathi , getting as close to the 27:10 target time as they can and

Queens Ekiden Streaming and Preview

Sunday is the first big race of championship ekiden season, the Queens Ekiden in Sendai, the season-ending national championship for corporate women. 24 teams race 42.195 km in 6 legs, with the top 8 scoring places for 2025. TBS' live nationwide broadcast starts at 11:50, with multi-camera streaming on Youtube above. Last year Sekisui Kagaku won by almost a minute and a half, and with Paris Olympian Yuma Yamamoto , 2023 World Championships marathoner Sayaka Sato on its entry list and collegiate 1500 m record holder Mizuki Michishita having come on board this season it looks like a contender for another win. But last year's runner-up Japan Post got a big boost this season with the addition of its first non-Japanese member, two-time double 1500 m and 3000 m high school champion Caroline Kariba . The Queens Ekiden limits non-Japanese athletes to a 3.8 km leg, so it'd be tough for Kariba to bridge a 1:25 gap by herself with that little ground to work with. But what she can

19-Yr-Old Munakata Breaks Miura's U20 NR to Win Ageo City Half Marathon

The Ageo City Half Marathon is always big, the main race that the coaches of Hakone Ekiden-bound university men's teams use for firming up their entry rosters for the big show. That makes what's basically an idyllic small town race into one of the world's great road races, with depth unmatched anywhere. One of the top-tier people on the start list at 1:02:07, Kodai Miyaoka (Hosei Univ.) took the race out fast, but the entire pack was keying off the fastest man in the race, Reishi Yoshida (Chuo Gakuin Univ.), 1:00:31. Yoshida reeled Miyaoka in before 5 km and kept things steady in the low-1:01 range, wearing down the lead group to around 10 including his CGU teammate Taisei Ichikawa , a quartet from Izumo and National University Ekiden runner-up Komazawa University , 2 runners from local Daito Bunka University , 2:07:54 marathoner Atsumi Ashiwa (Honda), and Australian Ed Goddard . Right after 15 km Komazawa went into action, Yudai Kiyama , Hibiki Murakami and Haru Tanin
