Thirteen National Record Holders Lead National Corporate Track and Field Championships

Another week, another national championships on the track. This weekend it's the 68th National Corporate Track and Field Championships Friday through Sunday in Kumagaya, Saitama, bringing together the corporate leagues across events on its usual date but just ahead of a series of meets relocated from the spring and early summer including the National Track and Field Championships.

Given everything that's happened to the calendar the field is higher-level than usual with seven national record holders, none of them the defending champion in their event. Shotaro Shiroyama (Zenrin) leads the men's long jump with a 8.40 m NR, Haruka Kitaguchi (JAL) the women's javelin throw at 66.00 m, Kumiko Okada (Bic Camera) the women's 5000 m race walk in 20:42.24, Yusuke Suzuki (Fujitsu) the men's 5000 m race walk in 18:37.22, Asuka Terada (Pasona Group) the women's 100 m hurdles in 12.97, Shunya Takayama (Zenrin) the men's 100 m hurdles in 13.25, and Naoto Tobe (JAL) the men's high jump at 2.35 m. Daichi Sawano (Fujitsu) is still in the game in the pole vault, almost 20 years on from his 5.83 m NR but still co-leading the field at 5.71 m.

Friday's women's 10000 m also has an exciting matchup between 20 km and half marathon NR holder Hitomi Niiya (Sekisui Kagaku), women-only marathon NR holder Mao Ichiyama (Wacoal) and her joint 25 km NR holders Sayaka Sato (Sekisui Kagaku) and Yuka Ando (Wacoal), and 30 km NR holder Honami Maeda (Tenmaya).  All but Maeda, winner of the Tokyo Olympics marathon trials, are entered to double in Sunday's 5000 m, where they'll face junior talents Ririka Hironaka (Japan Post) and Kaede Hagitani (Edion).

Saturday's men's 10000 m looks like the race of the weekend, and probably the biggest 10000 m in the world this year. With a best of 26:55.36 Rodgers Shumo Kwemoi (Aisan Kogyo) leads twenty men with bests under 28 minutes including three of this year's four fastest men worldwide Benard Kibet (Kyudenko), Bedan Karoki (Toyota) and Andrew Lorot (Subaru), Olympic marathon trials runner-up Yuma Hattori (Toyota) and over a dozen more. Sunday's 5000 m is solid too, with 13:12.65 man Evans Keitany (Toyota Boshoku) fronting a field of fourteen people under 13:30 including last year's winner Jonathan Ndiku (Toyota Boshoku).

The entire meet will be streamed live above and here starting at 13:30 local time on Friday.

I am so hyped to watch the women's 10000m race on Friday and the 5000m on Sunday. Such a great field too. Can Mao Ichiyama back up her previous performances from the last meet here! And with Hitomi Niiya in the field too! With Honami Maeda, Sayaka Sato, Yuka Ando and Mizuki Matsuda in this event, you have pretty much the bees knees of Japanese marathoners competing (apart from Suzuki Ayuko). Can't wait!

I don't fancy Ichiyama's chances in the 5000m event with only a day's rest but it will be interesting to see what time she finishes in. I think Ririka Hironaka will be one to watch as she did so well in the Exiden events late last year or was it earlier this year.

What will be super interesting is seeing what shoes they will be wearing as most wore their now outlawed Alphaflys or other higher stacked shoes and how this will impact their times.

Ageo City Half Marathon Preview and Streaming

This weekend's big race is the Ageo City Half Marathon , the next stop on the collegiate men's circuit. Most of the universities bound for the Jan. 2-3 Hakone Ekiden use Ageo to thin down the list of contenders for their final Hakone rosters, and with JRN's development program that sends the first two Japanese collegiate finishers in Ageo to the United Airlines NYC Half every year a lot of coaches put in some of their A-listers too. That gives Ageo legendary depth and fast front-end speed, with a 1:00:47 course record last year from Kenyan corporate leaguer Paul Kuira (JR Higashi Nihon) and the top 26 all clearing 63 minutes. Since a lot of programs just enter everybody on their rosters you never really know who on the entry list is actually going to show up, but if even a quarter of the people at the top end of this year's list run it'll be a great race, even if conditions are looking likely to be a bit warmer than ideal. Saku Chosei High School's Hamaguchi Runs 13:31.62 at Nittai

2023 National High School Ekiden champion Saku Chosei H.S. was out in force Sunday in the 5000 m fast heats at the 317th Nittai University Time Trials meet in Yokohama. 3rd-year Yamato Hamaguchi ran 13:31.62, the 4th-fastest time ever by a Japanese-born high schooler, and 3rd-year Tetsu Sasaki went under 14 minutes for the first time with an excellent 13:40.02. The race took place as light rain fell. Hamaguchi and Sasaki ran alongside African university and corporate league runners. From the start they were conservative, staying in the pack as the race went along. With splits of 2:42 and 1000 m and 8:11 at 3000 m the high school record of 13:22.99 set 2 years ago by Saku Chosei alum Hiroto Yoshioka was out of reach, but right til the last sprint Hamaguchi stayed in contact with the lead. Hamaguchi took almost 7 seconds off his 13:38.40 PB from last year, with Sasaki rewriting his 14:03.51 best by nearly 24 seconds. Both beat Yamanashi Gakuin H.S. 2nd-year Felix Muthiani , who ran

New Year Ekiden Field is Set

We're deep into championship ekiden season. Over the last two weekends the six regions making up the corporate leagues held their qualifying races for the Jan. 1 New Year Ekiden corporate men's national championships. The New Year Ekiden is one of the only national-level championship ekidens that doesn't give its podium finishers auto-qualifying spots for the next year, meaning every team has to run the regional races every November. It's not hard to see how that eats into the fall marathon season and how doing it the same way they do for all the other big ekidens, including the corporate women's national championships later this month, and having the top teams auto-qualify, would open up the fall schedule and improve Japan's performances in men's marathoning.
