World Jr. 10000 m and XC Champ Ibrahim Jeilan 13:09.95 for Shizuoka Win

2006 World Jr. 10000 m and 2008 World XC Jr. champion Ibrahim Jeilan (Ethiopia/Team Honda) outkicked 2011 World XC runner-up Paul Tanui and 10000 m Japanese all-comers record holder Josephat Ndambiri (Kenya/Team Komori Corp.) for the win in the 2011 Shizuoka International Track and Field Meet 5000 m on May 3 at Shizuoka's Ecopa Stadium. Jeilan sat back in the all-Kenyan lead pack until late the race, responding to a charge from Tanui over the last lap and kicking hard in the last 100 m to take the win a week after a disappointing 10000 m performance at the Hyogo Relay Carnival. Jeilan's time was less than 1 second off his 5-year-old PB and is the second-fastest in the world so far this year, putting him in contention for the Ethiopian team for August's World Championships. Despite losing out in the last sprint, Tanui set a new PB. 4th placer Edward Waweru (Kenya/Team Aichi Seiko) set a PB two days after winning Sunday's Nittai Univ. Time Trials 5000 m A-heat.



The longest woman's distance race on the program was 3000 m. Nami Tani (Team Univ. Ent.) outlasted Misaki Onishi (Team Sekisui Kagaku) by less than a second for the win in 9:13.02, both Tani and Onishi recording new PBs. 3rd placer Shiori Kakizaki (Team Wacoal) also had a PB run of 9:17.69.

To the south it was a fast day at the Nobeoka Spring Time Trials as nine of the top ten men in the 10000 m A-heat recorded new PBs. Nobeoka 5000 m winner and former Nittai University leader Kazuya Deguchi (Team Asahi Kasei) rounded out his pro debut with another win in a PB of 28:20.66. 2008 Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon winner Tomoya Adachi (Team Asahi Kasei) also took a second off his 10000 m PB, 5th in 28:28.23. Most noteworthy, 2011 World Championships marathoners Hiroyuki Horibata (Team Asahi Kasei) and Kentaro Nakamoto (Team Kyudenko) both broke their 10000 m PBs, Horibata 6th in 28:30.32 and Nakamoto 15th in 29:04.24.

Chesang Wins Osaka Women's Marathon in 2:19:31, Yada Drops 2:19:57 Debut NR

This year's Osaka International Women's Marathon was a race run with a high level of methodicalness, starting slower than the planned 3:19/km but ramping up until the lead pack was skimming around the 2:20:15-30 projected finish level. After hitting halfway in 1:10:13 with a group of 6, by 25 km only 4 were left up front, sub-2:19 runners Workenesh Edesa , Stella Chesang and Bedatu Hirpa , and the debuting Mikuni Yada , and when the last 2 pacers stepped off at 30 km it was Yada who went to the front. Despite never have raced longer than the 10.6 km Third Stage at November's Queens Ekiden where she had helped the Edion team score its first-ever national title, Yada was very, very impressive, fearlessly surging from 12 km and never letting up, even laughing and smiling to fans along the course. Hirayama Breaks Osaka Half CR, Martinez Set Puerto Rican NR

The Osaka Half Marathon took another big step up the domestic half marathon rankings from a mass-participation race run alongside the Osaka International Women's Marathon to one of the country's top-tier races. In the women's race, the debuting Jecinta Nyokabi (Denso) went out fast, only to be run down by veteran Yumi Yoshikawa (Canon AC) by 10 km. Nyokabi faded to 6th in 1:10:41, but Yoshikawa pushed on to a PB 1:09:14 for the win. Rina Shimizu (Noritz), Yuna Takahashi (Shimamura) and Makoto Tsuchiya (Ritsumeikan Univ.) all broke 70 minutes, Tsuchiya taking the Kansai Region collegiate title in 1:09:32 for 4th overall. Everyone in the top 10 who wasn't debuting ran a PB, a mark of how fast the day was even with cold and windy conditions.
