Hosaka Running Beppu-Oita This Weekend

59+ marathon world record holder Yoshihisa Hosaka (Natural Foods AC) is running Sunday's Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon in his first marathon at age 65.  In October he ran the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in an attempt on the age 64 world record. The video below includes a few shots of both Hosaka and fellow senior world record holder Ed Whitlock (Canada).

Sunday's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, featuring Kokushikan University alumnus Takashi Horiguchi (Team Honda), former Team Uniqlo ringer Danielle Filomena Cheyech (Kenya), 59+ world record holder Yoshihisa Hosaka (Natural Foods AC) and many more, will be streamed live worldwide.  For the first time, Japanese hosting of the webcast will be provided courtesy of Ekiden News.  Click here to follow the webcast starting at 9:30 p.m. Japan time on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Men's 59+ world record holder Yoshihisa Hosaka (Natural Foods AC), 2:34:23 at age 59, 2:36:30 at age 60, 2:38:12 at age 61, 2:46:30 at age 63 and 2:46:17 in July at the Gold Coast Airport Marathon at age 64, will be running next month's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon with support from JRN in pursuit of the 2:42:44 age 64 world record.  Hosaka will also meet 68+ world record holder Ed Whitlock in Toronto for a panel discussion at the race expo.  Look for coverage of the two greats' meeting in Courir and Running Times magazines later this fall.

'Horiguchi, Yoshitomi to Bring Strong Japanese Presence to Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon'

Takashi Horiguchi (Team Honda) and Hiroko Yoshitomi (First Dream AC) will run the Oct. 20 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon with support from JRN.  Horiguchi planned to run Toronto in 2010 before withdrawing shortly before the race with injury.  For Yoshitomi, the "female Kawauchi," it will be her international debut.

Two women from the Yamada Denki women's ekiden team, 2:28 marathoner Ayumi Nakayama and 1:10 half marathoner Maki Suzawa, will be running next month's Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Yamada Denki head coach Katsuaki Isobata invited JRN to attend Yamada Denki's altitude training camp in Sugadaira, Nagano the last weekend of August to watch some of Nakayama and Suzawa's training. Below are some photos of the weekend, primarily of a 30 km tempo run Nakayama did with accompaniment from several teammates. Click photos to enlarge.

Japanese Elites to Debut at Toronto Waterfront Marathon

One month to the day from Arata Fujiwara's course-record win at the Ottawa Marathon, the organizers of the Sept. 26 Toronto Waterfront Marathon have announced that they will invite four Japanese athletes to this year's race as part of their International Team Challenge team competition. The Japanese contingent, the first in the history of the event, will consist of Yamada Denki women's team runners Ayumi Nakayama and Maki Suzawa and Honda men's team athletes Takashi Horiguchi and Minoru Okuda. Race director Alan Brookes commented, "This is the first time we'll have had elite Japanese athletes on our flat, fast course. We're delighted to welcome Team Japan, a strong team from one of the great marathon-running nations, to Toronto Waterfront for the first time, and expect them to do very well against teams from around the world."

Nakayama holds a PB of 2:28:50 from the 2008 Osaka International Ladies Marathon. Freezing rain at this year'…
