Yohei Ikeda Honored at Hometown City Hall After All-Time JPN #2 Run at Berlin Marathon

After running the 2nd-fastest time ever by a Japanese man, 2:05:12, to finish 6th at the Sept. 29 Berlin Marathon, Yohei Ikeda (26, Kao) made an appearance at city hall in his hometown of Shimada, Shizuoka on Oct. 3. Ikeda told Mayor Kinuyo Someya , 70, "I'm disappointed that I missed my goal of breaking the Japanese national record by 16 seconds. But the work I put in paid off. This was a race that's going to lead to something more." Ikeda was a member of the baseball team when he was a student at Shimada Ichi J.H.S. before switching full-time to the track team at Shimada H.S. Starting his second year at Nittai University he was a regular on Nittai's Hakone Ekiden team. After graduating he joined the Kao corporate team, running 2:06:53 in his marathon debut at the 2023 Osaka Marathon. Historic Kanebo Team Moves to New Sponsor Kao

The longstanding Kanebo men's ekiden team sponsored by Kanebo Cosmetics Co, Ltd. has transferred as a whole to new sponsor Kao Corporation , headed by CEO Yoshihiro Hasebe , effective Oct. 1. Under the new team name Kao Athletics Club it will make a fresh start. From its base in Setagaya, Tokyo, the Kao Athletics Club will aim for the win at races like the East Japan Corporate Ekiden and the New Year Ekiden national championships, but its goals extend further. Under the team motto "Run With Hope" its members will work together to do what's necessary to become a team that produces national representatives at the World Championships and Olympics. The Kanebo team was founded in 1950 in Yamaguchi. After Kanebo's acquisition by Kao in 2006 the team relocated to Setagaya and strengthened its operations by replacing its coaching staff and bringing in a newer generation of athletes.
