Over 272,000 Apply for 2010 Tokyo Marathon

The Tokyo Marathon organizing committee announced on Sept. 2 that 272,134 people have applied for next year's race to be held on Feb. 28. The number represents a 19% increase from applications for the 2009 race, with 46,000 more people applying for the marathon. The 10 km event also saw its largest-ever number of applications with 39,307 people vying for a spot.

The 2010 Tokyo Marathon's field size is limited to 32,000 with an additional 3000 in the 10 km. The application period closed at the end of August, and results of the lottery to choose runners from the applicant pool will be announced in mid-October.

The SG Holdings men's corporate team announced on Oct. 1 that long-distance athletes Hyuga Endo and Yuichiro Nishikawa have joined its roster after leaving the Sumitomo Denko team. 3 Athletes Provisionally Suspended After Positive Drug Tests at Asian Games (updated)

The International Testing Agency announced on Oct. 2 that provisional suspensions have been imposed on two athletes, Kazakhstan's Aiana Bolatbekkyzy in track and field, and Tajikistan's Issamjon Sharifov in tennis, after they tested positive for prohibited substances at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Aichi. Bolatbekkyzy, 19, tested positive for the steroid drostanolone in a sample collected during an in-competition test at the Games. A diuretic drug was found in the sample collected from Sharifov, 23.
