At the Dec. 14 All-Japan Jitsugyodan Women's Ekiden in Gifu Prefecture, track queen Kayoko Fukushi placed a surprising 5th on the 10 km 3rd stage of the 6-leg, 42.195 km race. Fukushi was at a loss to explain the weak performance, commenting, "I have no idea what happened. I genuinely wanted to run faster than that," with a weak smile.
Fukushi has been suffering from injuries to her left leg which have prevented her from training properly, but she shrugged them off, saying, "All I can do is keep trying harder." Asked about her future plans now that the Beijing Olympics are behind her, Fukushi replied, "I'm not thinking about a marathon."
