Japan's Team for Nagoya Asian Games

The JOC announced the full lineups for the men's and women's teams for September's Nagoya Asian Games. Being hosted in Japan the Asian Games are a pretty big deal, and it's pretty close to the maximum of 2 athletes per event. The men's and women's triple jump, the women's 400 m and the women's discus throw only have 1 athlete on the Japanese team, and it's a big FU to the shot putters apparently as nobody was named to either the men's or women's teams even though people ranked lower in the World Athletics Asian rankings than top JPN shot putters Daichi Morishita and Chiharu Saka did make the team in other events.

But, let's focus on what it is, not what it isn't. Going off this week's Asian rankings 8 men and 5 women are ranked #1 in their event, with a total of 19 men and 14 women ranked in the top 3. Factor in a limit of 2 per nationality and the relays and Japan's chances of scoring a great medal haul are looking good. Men's 3000 m NR holder Nagiya Mori is set to double in the 1500 m and 5000 m, with Abigail Fuka Ido doubling in the women's 100 m and 200 m and Nozomi Tanaka setting up for a 1500 m - 5000 m - 10000 m triple. Sumitomo Denko is the most-represented corporate team with 7 men and 3 women, and 8 college students and even 1 high schooler, 400 m hurdler Taiju Goto, were named to the team.

A few of the people on the list don't seem likely to actually make it to Nagoya, especially men's high jumper Ryoichi Akamatsu, who hasn't competed since last October, and men's 5000 m runner Tomonori Yamaguchi, who missed Nationals last month with a stress fracture, but given Japan's depth in those events there should be good alternates available. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
