Japan in Wanjiru - In Conclusion.....

by Brett Larner I don't expect that many people will take the considerable time necessary to read the full texts of all four interviews in this series .  I plan to edit the most important quotes from Samuel Wanjiru’s Japanese mentors and colleagues together into a cohesive account of his career from the Japanese point of view, but in the meantime, looking at the commonalities between the interviews and other previously-published details this story emerges, incomplete as it is: Wanjiru was discovered by the Japanese scout Shunichi Kobayashi and sent to Sendai Ikuei H.S. in 2002. At Sendai Ikuei, he was educated and developed by Takao Watanabe , who focused not only on development as an athlete but also on psychological and personal development.  Watanabe receives unanimous credit in Japan as the primary influence on Wanjiru's mental and spiritual growth.  Watanabe introduced Wanjiru to Kenyan Stephen Mayaka , a longtime resident of Japan who came to assist Wanjiru in h...

Charles Ndirangu Leads Sera Back to National High School Boys Ekiden Championships Title

As in the girls' race, the 2009 National High School Boys Ekiden champion took back the top position Dec. 25 in Kyoto, with Hiroshima's Sera H.S.  taking the win in an all-time top ten 2:03:50 for the hilly seven-stage, 42.195 km course.  Many of the favorites, including defending national champion  Kagoshima Jitsugyo H.S. , 2008 champ Saku Chosei H.S. , Samuel Wanjiru 's alma mater Sendai Ikuei H.S. , and the powerful Nishiwaki Kogyo H.S. , suffered pre-Championships setbacks with injuries to their star runners, paving the way for the unheralded Kurashiki H.S.  to take the runner-up spot in 2:05:13, both its best placing and fastest time ever. Kyushu Gakuin H.S.  ace Kazuma Kubota  got things off on the right foot, winning the 10.0 km First Stage in 29:38 in a beautiful performance that ...

Toyokawa Returns to Top in National High School Girls Ekiden Championships

by Brett Larner Toyokawa H.S. senior Beatrice Murugi Wainaina for the win at the 2011 National High School Girls Ekiden Championships. Click photo for video highlights via broadcaster NHK. For the second time in three years, Kenyan Beatrice Murugi Wainaina led Toyokawa High School  to the National High School Girls Ekiden Championships title as she crossed the line in 1:07:29, the fifth-fastest time ever on the five-stage, 21.0975 km course through Kyoto on Dec. 25.  Defending champion Kojokan High School  ace Katsuki Suga  faltered on the 6.0 km opening stage, the day's longest, finishing only 6th on the stage and putting Kojokan permanently out of contention.  Only one second behind the lead at the handoff, Toyokawa's Kanayo Miyata  had little trouble taking over on the 4.0975 km Second Stage.  After a brief challenge from the strong Suma Gakuen High School 's Yui Fukuda  on the 3.0 km Third Stage, Toyokawa's Fourth Stage runner Shiho Fuk...

Yoshikawa and Shimizu Pick Up Olympic A-Qualifiers at Nittai

by Brett Larner Five-time 1500 m national champion  Mika Yoshikawa  (Team Panasonic) and ekiden ace  Yuko Shimizu  (Team Sekisui Kagaku) closed off their years in style at the Dec. 24 Nittai University Women's Long Distance Time Trials meet in Yokohama.  Running in the 5000 m A-heat, Yoshikawa took 13 seconds off her PB to clear the London Olympics A-standard in 15:15.33.  Just over half an hour later, Shimizu sliced more than 30 seconds from her 10000 m PB to join Yoshikawa in clearing the Olympic A-standard in a new best of 31:43.25.  Yoshikawa is the third Japanese woman to hit the 5000 m A-standard and Shimizu the fourth in the 10000 m, but with higher-ranking qualifiers Megumi Kinukawa  (Team Mizuno) and Kayoko Fukushi  (Team Wacoal) aiming for the marathon both have excellent chances of making the London team at this stage. 2011 Nittai University Women's Long Distance Time Trials Yokohama, 12/24/11 click here for complete results ...

Will Wanjiru's Record Fall? Watch the National High School Ekiden Championships Live

The 2011 National High School Ekiden Championships take place Dec. 25 in Kyoto.  Both the girls' and boys' races will be broadcast live and commercial-free on NHK.  Overseas viewers should be able to watch live online via Keyhole TV using the password, which should be the same as the name of the broadcasting network.  The girls' race will be broadcast from 10:05 to 11:54 a.m. Japan time, with boys' race taking place from 12:15 to 2:52 p.m. My apologies for the lack of a full preview article, but getting all the material for the Japan in Wanjiru series together this week has really taken a lot out of me.  If for no other reason, this year's Nationals are worth watching because Kenyan Charles Ndirangu  of Sera H.S. has an excellent chance of breaking Samuel Wanjiru 's record on the Third Stage if the weather holds.  Ndirangu missed Wanjiru's historic 2004 mark by one second last year and since then has set the Japanese high school 5000 m record.  Tun...

Akaba Sets Course Record at Sanyo Women's Half Marathon, Noguchi 5th

by Brett Larner Daegu World Championships marathon 5th-place finisher Yukiko Akaba  (Team Hokuren) ran an aggressive race Dec. 23 at the 30th Sanyo Women's Road Race half marathon, winning in a 1:09:16 record for the hilly course over a tough field including marathon national record holder Mizuki Noguchi  (Team Sysmex). Akaba, Noguchi, 2010's top female Japanese half marathoner Yoko Miyauchi  (Team Kyocera), last year's Sanyo 10 km division winner Kenyan Sally Chepyego  (Team Kyudenko), and Akaba's Daegu teammate Mai Ito  (Team Otsuka Seiyaku) took the race out at course record pace.  The pack ran the early stages fast enough that Noguchi, running as a test for her comeback at next month's Osaka International Women's Marathon, lost touch after only 7 km.  The lead four hit 10 km in 32:45, on track for a 1:09:06 finish, before Akaba surged away to mid-68 pace and built a lead that was never cracked.  Fading in the last 5 km, she neverthele...

Japan in Wanjiru - Yasuto Kimura

The fourth in JRN's series of in-depth, original interviews with the Japanese friends and colleagues of Samuel Wanjiru , this interview with Yasuto Kimura , a popular Tokyo-based coach of amateur runners and a former Hakone Ekiden ace with Chuo University who became close friends with Wanjiru following his departure from the Toyota Kyushu corporate team in 2008, is the most personal of them all. Click here for an introduction to this series of interviews and for links to the previous interviews with Masato Imai, Stephen Mayaka, Yu Mitsuya and Koichi Morishita.
