Ichiyama Runs 8th-Fastest JPN Time Ever to Win National Corporate Half

Following up last weekend's NR-breaking Marugame Half where the top 24 men went under 61 minutes, today's National Corporate Half Marathon delivered another big one. Yuma Nishizawa (Toyota Boshoku) and Shadrack Kipchirchir (Chudenko) broke away from the pack mid-race and opened a substantial lead, but in the last few km Tsubasa Ichiyama (Sunbelx) closed the gap and passed them by. Ichiyama took almost a minute off his PB to win in 1:00:22, the 8th-fastest time ever by a Japanese man.

Favorite Tatsuhiko Ito (Honda) closed hard to pass Nishizawa and Kipchirchir on the track but couldn't catch Ichiyama, 5 seconds behind in 2nd in 1:00:27 with Nishizawa right behind in 1:00:29 for 3rd. Coming off an injury in November that held him back at last month's New Year Ekiden, Ichiyama told JRN post-race, "This was a big confidence builder for my next race." That would be next month's Tokyo Marathon.

The top 14 men were all under 61 minutes. Compared to that the women's race was relatively conservative, with only 2 women clearing 70 minutes. Shiori Yoshizono (Tenmaya) got the win in 1:09:45, holding off Kaede Kawamura (Iwatani Sangyo) by 5 seconds. Kazuna Kanetomo (Mitsui Sumitomo Kaijo) was 3rd in 1:10:20.

Paris Olympian Yuma Yamamoto (Sekisui Kagaku) had a characteristically good one in the women's 10 km, taking the win by 30 seconds in 32:33. For the first time the National Corporate Championships featured a men's 10 km, which went to Komazawa University grad Taiyo Yasuhara (Kao) in 29:08.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof.
