National XC Championships Streaming and Start Lists


The 2025 National Cross Country Championships happen Saturday in Fukuoka. Streaming starts at 11:20 a.m. local time, with the race schedule looking like this:

11:50 - H.S, girls' 4 km
12:10 - H.S. boys: 4 km
12:30 - Senior women's 2 km
12:40 - Senior men's 2 km
12:50 - U20 women's 6 km
13:15 - U20 men's 8 km
13:50 - Senior women's 8 km
14:25 - Senior men's 10 km
15:05 - J.H.S. girls' 2 km
15:20 - J.H.S. boys' 2 km

Start lists are here. Based on those, the senior men's 10 km looks like it has the best matchup, with the field including 3000 mSC NR holder Ryuji Miura (Subaru), 10000 m NR holder Kazuya Shiojiri (Fujitsu), 5000 m H.S. record holder Hiroto Yoshioka (Juntendo Univ.), Olympic triathlete Kenji Nener (Tochigi T&F Assoc.), Hakone downhill star Aoi Ito (Komazawa Univ.), sub-28 10000 m runners Yusuke Tamura (Kurosaki Harima) and Ryuto Igawa (Asahi Kasei), and many more.

There's not a lot of comparable depth in the senior women's 8 km, where Sayuki Ota and Yumi Yamamoto from national champion Ritsumeikan University are realistically probably the favorites. Corporate league hopes include Momoka Kawaguchi (Uniqlo) and Yuri Tasaki (Sysmex).

The U20 men's 8 km is packed with talent from top high school programs including national champ Saku Chosei H.S., Miura's alma mater Rakunan H.S., Tosu Kogyo H.S., Yachiyo Shoin H.S. and Omuta H.S. Likewise in the U20 women's 6 km, where national champion Nagano Higashi H.S. faces Osaka Kunei Joshi H.S., Ritsumeikan Uji H.S. and more. National High School Ekiden runner-up Sendai Ikuei H.S. is giving it a miss.

The senior men's 2 km doesn't seem to have been a draw for top-tier talent, but the women's 2 km includes corporate leaguers Ran Urabe and Chikako Mori (both Sekisui Kagaku), and Yuzuki Nishide (Daihatsu). Performances at National XC this time around will count heavily in team selection for the 2026 Tallahassee World XC Championships.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
