Two Meet Records and Kiryu in the 200 m - Kanto Regionals Day Three Highlights

Following up on his 100 m title and anchor run for Toyo University's 4x100 m team, Rio Olympics men's 4x100 m silver medalist Yoshihide Kiryu rolled on through day three of his final Kanto Region University Track and Field Championships, winning his 200 m heat in 20.79 +1.3 m/s. Where he easily dominated all three rounds of the 100 m, this time Kiryu had pressure. In Heat 3, second-year Jun Yamashita (Tsukuba Univ.) ran 20.71 -0.5 m/s to take the top spot heading into the semi-finals.


After a raft of meet records on the second day of Regionals, two more events saw new records on day three. In the D2 men's javelin throw, little-known Ryoma Nakaura (Ibaraki Univ.) threw a meet record 71.93 m to win by over six meters. The competition of the day came in the D1 men's pole vault, where both fourth-year Koki Kuruma (Juntendo Univ.) and first-year Masaki Ejima (Nihon Univ.) cleared the ancient 5.40 m meet record dating back to 1998. 6th in both the 2015 World Youth Championships and 2016 World U20 Championships, Ejima tied his PB of 5.50 m to take 2nd, Kuruma getting the win as he cleared his PB by 15 cm for a new meet record of 5.55 m.



In long distance action, Rio 3000 mSC Olympian and defending D1 champ Kazuya Shiojiri (Juntendo Univ.) opted to sit the steeple out in favor of more orthodox distance. In his absence, Ryoma Aoki (Hosei Univ.) took the D1 title in 8:52.77. D2 winner Taisei Ogino (Kanagawa Univ.) was faster, running six seconds better than he did last year to win for the second year in a row in 8:51.16.  Second last year, 2015 women's 3000 mSC winner Moeno Shimizu (Tokyo Nogyo Univ.) returned to the top, winning by more than ten seconds in 10:19.41.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
