Kiryu Takes Final Kanto 100 m Title - Kanto Regionals Day Two Highlights

Day two of the Kanto Region University Track and Field Championships saw one of the the country's greats, Rio Olympics men's 4x100 m silver medalist Yoshihide Kiryu (Toyo Univ.), lining up in the meet's 100 m for the final time of his college career. Heading into the semi-finals with the fastest time in the heats, Kiryu easily topped the semis with a 10.15 +1.8 m/s to take the top spot among the qualifiers for the final. There he ran 10.24 -0.5 m/s to add one last Kanto 100 m title to his collection. Anchoring Toyo's 4x100 m team he brought them home in 4th in 39.56, leaving just one more event, the 200 m, before he wraps up his final appearance at Japan's best meet.


Kiryu aside, the day was highlighted by four meet records on both the track and field. In the D2 men's 400 m final Fuga Sato (Sakushin Gakuin Univ.) set a new meet record of 46.32, a time that would have put him 3rd in the D1 final. In the D1 men's 110 mH final  Taio Kanai (Hosei Univ.) shaved 0.01 off the meet record to win in 13.63 +0.4 m/s.  In the women's javelin throw Marina Saito (Kokushikan Univ.) threw a meet record 61.07 m to win by almost 9 meters. The final new record came in the men's D1 long jump with the day's most exciting competition. Going into their final jumps Nihon University teammates Yuki Hashioka and Daiki Oda were tied at 7.78 m. On his final attempt Hashioka, a first-year, miraculously jumped a meet record 8.04 m, and when four-year Oda blew his last try the title went to the younger new star.


The day's main long distance action was the women's 10000 m. Due to the Hakone Ekiden-induced predominance of men's long distance in the Hakone region, the Kansai region is traditionally stronger in university women's distance. But nevertheless, this year's women's 10000 m had both quality and depth. Natsuki Sekiya (Daito Bunka Univ.), runner-up in the 5000 m last year, edged local Saitama rival Maki Izumida (Rikkyo Univ.) and last year's winner Ai Hosoda (Nittai Univ.) by 0.11 to take the title in 33:12.05. Last year Hosoda doubled back from her 10000 m title to win the 5000 m. On Sunday Sekiya will try to duplicate that feat on the meet's closing day.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
