Kariuki Doubles With D2 Half Marathon Meet Record - Kanto Regionals Day Four Highlights


Japan's best meet of the season wrapped up Sunday at Yokohama's Nissan Stadium. Day four of the Kanto Region University Track and Field Championships with the men's half marathon, its two divisions running with a staggered start over a circuit course starting and ending inside the stadium. D1 runner-up in the 10000 m Dominic Nyairo (Yamanashi Gakuin Univ.) took a second-straight title in the D1 race, bettering his winning time from last year by almost two minutes to win in 1:03:22. Back from setting a D2 10000 m meet record of 28:00.66 on Thursday, Simon Kariuki (Nihon Yakka Univ.) set another D2 meet record as he outran Hakone Ekiden champion Aoyama Gakuin University's Yuta Shimoda to win in 1:02:38.


Like the 10000m and half marathon, in both divisions Africans dominated the 5000 m. Patrick Wambui (Nihon Univ.) doubled on his D1 10000 m title to take the 5000 m in 13:43.97 in a close race with Shota Onizuka (Tokai Univ.). Africans took the top four spots in the D2 race, Muiri Muthoni (Soka Univ.) getting the win in 13:43.20, top-placing Japanese man Yuki Suzuki (Kanagawa Univ.) running only 14:09.24 for 5th. Like Wambui, women's 10000 m champ Natsuki Sekiya (Daito Bunka Univ.) doubled in the 5000 m, holding off last year's winner Ai Hosoda (Nittai Univ.) by a second to win in 15:56.21.


Along with Kariuki's D2 meet record in the half, four other meet records also fell on the final day. In the women's 4x400 m relay Nittai University ran 3:37.80 to break both the meet and Kanto Region records. The Surugadai University men also broke the meet record in the D2 4x400 m, winning in 3:07.40. Collegiate heptathlon record holder Meg Hemphill (Chuo Univ.) broke her own meet record with a new mark of 5631. Most impressively, the top four in the D2 men's 800 m all broke the meet record, Miran Saito (Aoyama Gakuin Univ.) lopping two seconds off a record dating back to 1994 to win in 1:48.74.


No record came in the men's 200 m, but there Rio Olympics 4x100 m silver medalist Yoshihide Kiryu (Toyo Univ.) brought his Kanto Regionals career to an end as he added the 200 m title to the 100 m title he won Friday. Opening with 20.79 +1.3 m/2 in Saturday's heats, Kiryu went on to run 20.59 +0.3 m/s to lead the semis before winning the final in 20.46 +2.9 m/s.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
