Japanese Athletes in Action on Tokyo World Championships Day 4



Japanese athletes lining up on Day 4 of the Tokyo World Athletics Championships Tuesday night:

19:35 - Men's 800 m Heats
Ko Ochiai (Komazawa Univ.) - 1:45.16 - 1st, Nationals

Prognosis: An NR breaker in high school, Ochiai made the Worlds team on a host country ticket. Probably best to view this one as experiential.

19:40 - Women's Triple Jump Qualification
Maoko Takashima (Kyudenko) - 13.92 m (+0.2) - 1st, Nationals
Mariko Morimoto (Orico) - 13.83 m (+0.8) - 3rd, Nationals

Prognosis: National top 2 Takashima and Morimoto are near the very bottom of the triple jump field, so it's not likely either will make it to the final. Morimoto has better chances on paper but Takashima has been outperforming her this season.

(20:36 - Men's High Jump Final)

Prognosis: The men's high jump squad was probably the hardest to make outside the road events, and any or all of the 3 men on it could make the final.

(20:40 - Men's 110 m Hurdles Semi-Final)

Prognosis: NR holder Rachid Muratake is a medal contender and it would be a surprise not to see him make the semis or the final. Whether he has company in the semis remains to be seen.

(21:01 - Men's Hammer Throw Final)

Prognosis: You're not likely to see national champ Shota Fukuda make it to the final.

(21:07 - Women's 400 m Semi-Final)

Prognosis: Nanako Matsumoto actually ran really well on the anchor leg of the mixed 4x400 m relay to move Japan in qualifying position for the final in NR time, so maybe that momentum will put her in the individual semi-final.

(21:35 - Men's 400 m Semi-Final)

Prognosis: Joseph Nakajima could be here, national champ Fuga Sato unlikely to be.

(22:05 - Women's 1500 m Final)

Prognosis: Same. Nozomi Tanaka could be here, Tomoka Kimura unlikely to be.

(22:20 - Men's 110 m Hurdles Final)

Prognosis: If Muratake can avoid hitting the first hurdle again like in his last Diamond League race then he should be a medal contender.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
