Updates to Japan's Potential Team for Tokyo World Championships

No new additions to Japan's potential team for the Tokyo World Championships as things head into the last couple of weeks before the Aug. 24 qualifying deadline. The biggest mover this week was Naoto Hasegawa, 3rd in the men's high jump at July's National Championships, who scored back-to-back wins at the silver label Tirop P-T-S Meeting in Slovakia and gold label Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Hungary to move up from 23rd to 18th in the quota of 36. Ken Toyoda also picked up a couple of places in the men's 400 mH off a 49.37 for 6th at the IFAM Oordegem meet in Belgium.

Rin Suzuki's chances of making the Tokyo team in the men’s javelin throw got a boost too despite a weak performance at the P-T-S Meeting. The 4th-placer there, Belgium's Timothy Herman, scored just enough points to come in between Suzuki and Nationals 3rd-placer Gen Naganuma, who had been separated by only 1 point in the Road to Tokyo rankings. That bumped Naganuma out of the top 36 while leaving Suzuki at 35th, meaning the JAAF will pick Suzuki if he hangs on.

Oordegem had a big impact on men's distance, the results there pretty much putting National Championships 5000 m runner-up Nagiya Mori out of range of the 42-deep quota. 5000 m national champ Ryuto Igawa and 10000 m national champ Mebuki Suzuki both ran well there, Igawa with a 13:14.58 and Suzuki showing he's back from his fall at Nationals with a 13:16.43, but neither is anywhere close to overtaking Mori in the rankings let alone the top 42. But Suzuki still has a good chance of making the 10000 m, where he’s 2nd in line for a roll down spot.

National Championships men's 3000 mSC top 2 Ryoma Aoki and Yutaro Niinae were both knocked out of the quota by the super deep results in the Oordegem steeple, in Niinae's case even though he broke 8:20 for the first time. Niinae currently sits at 1st in line for any roll downs after the Aug. 24 deadline, meaning he has a realistic chance of still being on the Tokyo team, but with national champ Aoki currently the 4th-best outside the quota it doesn't look likely he'll pick up a spot. Fuga Sato also got bumped out of the men's 400 m quota, falling from 48th of 48 to 1st in line for a roll down.

Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
