9 Meet Records at National University Individual Championships


The National University Individual Track and Field Championships has always been the lesser cousin to September's National University Track and Field Championships, but in recent years it has started to see quality performances of its own, and with the reshuffling of the calendar this year to account for the Tokyo World Championships enough top-level collegiate talent came to Hiratsuka, Kanagawa to set 9 new meet records. A breakdown of top performances:
  • Hiroki Yanagita (Toyo Univ.) kicked off his senior year with a solid 10.09 (+1.8) to lead the men's 100 m semifinals, but then sat out the final where his 3rd-year teammate Riku Oishi won in 10.19 (+0.8).
  • Genta Iki (Kyoto Sangyo Univ.) had a near-miss on the men's 200 m MR, winning easily in 20.65 (+1.2).
  • The top 3 in the men's 800 m all broke the meet record set last year, with NR holder Ko Ochiai (Komazawa Univ.) winning in 1:45.88, just 0.13 shy of the collegiate record at the very start of his collegiate career.
  • Toyo's Kaito Matsui and Waseda University 1st-year Rui Suzuki both broke the men's 5000 m MR, Matsui getting the win in 13:44.59 by 0.24 over Suzuki.
  • Tatsuki Abe (Juntendo Univ.) ran a 13.26 (+0.7) MR to lead the men's 110 mH semifinals, then won the final just off that mark in 13.30 (+1.3).
  • Ryosuke Takahashi (Hosei Univ.) had the near-miss of the weekend in the men's 400 mH final, just 0.01 off the MR with a 49.41 for the win.
  • Another double MR came in the men's 3000 mSC, 1st-year Tetsu Sasaki (Waseda Univ.) winning in 8:36.30 over Hinata Kuroki (Soka Univ.), 2nd in 8:38,19.
  • Four men broke the 10000 mRW MR, Sotaro Osaka continuing Toyo's domination of the event with a winning 38:44.88.
  • Sota Haraguchi (Juntendo Univ.) had a good one in the men's high jump, clearing 2.25m on his 2nd attempt and bettering his own MR by 2 cm to win by 9 cm.
  • Men's shot put MR holder Jason Atuobeng (Fukuoka Univ.) was just 3 cm off his own record, winning by over 50 cm with a final attempt of 18.39 m.
  • The top 3 women in the final broke the 1500 m MR, Fuka Otagaki (Sonoda Gakuen Joshi Univ.) getting the win in 4:19.26 by 0.68 over Runa Shoji (Kantaiheiyo Univ.).
  • Rei Honda (Juntendo Univ.) set a MR 13.08 (+0.4) in the women's 100 mH semifinals but couldn't carry that momentum to the final where she lost to Mao Shimano (Nihon Joshi Taiiku Univ.) 13.10 to 13.12 (+0.3).
  • Kaede Ito (Nittai Univ.) tied the women's high jump MR, clearing 1.81 m on her 3rd attempt.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
