In preparation for the Mar. 6 Tokyo Marathon, the Tokyo Police Department held a drill involving the scenario of a man driving onto the course and taking a runner hostage with a gun. The training session took place Feb. 18 near Asakusa on the Tokyo course. The police department's ERT emergency rapid response unit engaged the man, shot the gun out of his hand, and overpowered him. A canine unit dog then discovered an explosive device, which was removed by the police bomb squad.
The drill was part of the police department's policy of increasing surveillance and response at sporting events involving public roads. Police officials ask members of the public to immediately call 110 if they see any suspicious people or objects.
