Takayama and Izumiya Tie 110 m Hurdles NR in Heavy Rain - National Track and Field Championships Day Four Highlights

On the final day of the 2019 National Track and Field Championships Shunya Takayama (Zenrin) and Kensuke Izumiya (Juntendo Univ.) raced each other to a men's 110 m hurdles national record-tying 13.36. With one of the favorites, Taio Kanai (Mizuno) out after a false start in the semis, Takayama and Izumiya were side by side. In the middle of the heaviest rain of the day they went right to the line together. Izumiya looked as though he had it, but on review Takayama was timed at 13.354 and Izumiya at 13.356, both tying Takayama's national record on official time. Having cleared the Doha standard Takayama earned a place on the national team for this fall's Doha World Championships.

The rain also impacted the women's and men's 200 m. Local collegian Mei Kodama (Fukuoka Univ.) won the women's 200 m in 23.80 (-0.4 m/s), a PB but on the slow side for a national championship. Favorite Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (Univ. of Florida) fought off Yuki Koike (Sumitomo Denko) and Yoshihide Kiryu (Nihon Seimei) for the men's title, winning in 20.35 (-1.3 m/s). Having taken both titles Sani Brown now has the option to double in Doha as well.

Collegiate runners took the top three spots in the women's 400 m hurdles, Akiko Ito (Tsukuba Univ.) winning in 57.09. Another local Natsumi Kanda (Fukuoka Univ.) won the women's high jump at 1.77 m, with Nanaka Kori (Kyushu Kyoritsu Univ.) taking the women's shot put with a throw of 16.06 m. Yuki Hashioka (Nihon Univ.) completed the collegiate domination, taking the title with a jump of 7.98 m (-1.1 m/s) to join Takayama and Sani Brown in Doha.

In middle distance, women's 1500 m champ Ran Urabe (Nike Tokyo TC) ran a smart race to win the 800 m, progressively moving up through the pack to pull away halfway through the final curve for the win in a PB of 2:02.74. Masaki Toda (Sunbelx) led a fast by Japanese standards men's 1500 m in 3:39.44, with all of the top five except favorite Hiroki Matsueda (Fujitsu) running PBs. Two-time defending champ Ryoji Tatezawa (Tokai Univ.) was only 9th in 3:44.39.

Along with the men's 10000 m held last month, the women's 5000 m was one of the only two events to feature foreign athletes. Three Kenyans and one Ethiopian led the way after a relatively slow first 1000 m, with five of the six main contenders, Tomoka Kimura (Shiseido), Rina Nabehima (Japan Post), Ririka Hironaka (Japan Post), Nozomi Tanaka (Toyota Jidoshokki TC) and Sayaka Sato (Sekisui Kagaku) in tow. The rest of the pack dropped away, and when it came down to the last lap this year's fastest Japanese woman Kimura went to the front. Kenyans Cynthia Baire (Kamimura Gakuen H.S.) and Tabitha Njeri Kamau (Mitsui Sumitomo Kaijo) both went just under the Doha standard, Baire 1st across the line in 15:21.48 and Kamau next in 15:21.80. Kimura was 3rd in 15:22.53, winning the national title and, having already cleared the Doha standard earlier this season, her place on the national team. Last year's top two Nabeshima and Tanaka were 4th and 6th overall, with newcomer Hironaka getting between them for 5th.
