Keitany Breaks Golden Games in Nobeoka 5000 m Meet Record, Kimura Under 15:20 and Shitara Sub-28



One of Japan's main spring meets, the Golden Games in Nobeoka saw some strong performances in its 30th edition. Evans Keitany (Toyota Boshoku) ran the performance of the day, breaking the 5000 m meet record with a 13:12.65 to win the almost all-African D-Heat. 2019 national cross-country champion Yuta Bando (Fujitsu) came in at all-time Japanese #24 in the same heat with a 13:26.70 for 12th, the first runner to crack the Japanese top 25 in four years. By comparison, all-time #2 Tetsuya Yoroizaka (Asahi Kasei) won the 5000 m A-heat in 13:36.77.

Half marathon national record holder Yuta Shitara (Honda) continued his forward momentum this season after a long slump following his 2:06:11 at last year's Tokyo Marathon, winning the 10000 m in 27:53.67 to become the first Japanese man under 28 this year. Shitara surprised everyone by announcing post-race that he plans to run July's Gold Coast Marathon before doing the Sept. 15 MGC Race Olympic marathon trials. His fellow trials qualifiers Daiji Kawai (Toenec) and Shohei Otsuka (Kyudenko) were both under 28:30 at 4th and 5th in the 10000 m, with one more qualifier, Shogo Nakamura (Fujitsu), 9th in the 5000 m A-heat in 13:47.51,

2019 Hakone Ekiden champion Tokai University showed off one of its star first-year recruits in the men's 1500 m. First-year Kazuto Iizawa ran 3:42.07 to beat team captain and former indoor mile national record holder Ryoji Tatezawa by almost 2 seconds. South Korean Jung Kook Lee was 3rd in 3:44.63.

The women's 5000 m A-heat saw a seething battle over the last few laps that ended with all-time Japanese #11 Tomoka Kimura (Shiseido) on top in 15:19.99, her first time under 15:20 in two years. A three-way sprint finish for 2nd saw Minami Yamanouchi (Kyocera), Martha Mokaya (Canon AC Kyushu) and Nozomi Tanaka (Toyota Jidoshokki) go 2-3-4 all within 0.97 seconds of each other. Rookie Ririka Hironaka (Japan Post) and national corporate half marathon champion Sayaka Sato (Sekisui Kagaku) both continued a good season, going under 15:30 for 5th and 6th.

Fresh from just missing out on a medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Ran Urabe (Nike Tokyo TC) won the women's 1500 m in a PB of 4:15.59. Yume Goto (Toyota Jidoshokki TC) and Kaede Hagitani (Edion) also cleared 4:20 for 2nd and 3rd.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
