JAAF Announces Revised Selection Policy for 2019 Doha World Championships Track and Field Events

At its Dec. 17 board of directors meeting  the JAAF finalized its revised selection policy for track and field events at the 2019 Doha World Championships.

Athletes who have cleared the IAAF's newly released entry standards and win their event at the National Championships to be held in Fukuoka in late June will be named to the national team. Gold medalists at April's Doha Asian Championships who also win at the National Championships will likewise be named to the team. National Championships winners who do not have the standard will have until Sept. 15 to hit it in order to join the final team roster.

Up to three athletes can qualify per event. Selection of additional athletes beyond National Championships winners will be based on the following criteria:
  1. The highest-ranked Japanese athlete in the Sept. 16 edition of the IAAF world rankings to have cleared the entry standard in their event.
  2. Doha Asian Championships gold medalists who have cleared the entry standard in their event.
  3. Athletes who have cleared the entry standard in their event and who the JAAF like.
  4. Doha Asian Championships gold medalists who the JAAF like.
  5. Additional athletes may be chosen after the Sept. 17 deadline for final entries if offered the opportunity to compete by the IAAF based on world ranking. 
The JAAF also approved a plan for the men's and women's 10000 m to be held separately from the National Championships. Instead they will be held May 19 at Osaka's Nagai Stadium where the Golden Grand Prix Osaka meet will take place on that date. The concept is that by shifting the timing of the 10000 m earlier it will enable athletes to target better 5000 m performances at the National Championships a month later. Because qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is expected to be based on the IAAF's world rankings the JAAF will seek to maximize the conditions and points athletes can earn in the races.

The Doha World Championships will be held Sept. 27 to Oct. 6.  In the three months between then and June's National Championships athletes who have qualified for the team will be obligated to file reports on their training with the national Olympic development coach for their event. Additional requirements for mandatory medical checks and dealing with situations in which athletes who qualify for the team but sustain injuries were also established.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit.
