Yabuta and Yamaguchi Break Steeplechase National Records in Abashiri


Most of Japan's distance runners retreat north to Hokkaido for the summer to escape the heat and put in mileage for ekiden season. The four-part Hokuren Distance Challenge series gives them the chance to add some quality into the mix, whether for chasing standards, padding their resumes, or general development.

The main focus of the first part of the 2018 series, held in the town of Abashiri, was on 10000 m for women and 5000 m for men. In cold and rain times weren't especially fast, Minami Yamanouchi (Kyocera) continuing a solid first season in the corporate leagues with a win in the women's 10000 m A-heat in 32:35.74 and Sayaka Sato (Sekisui Kagaku) taking the B-heat in 32:55.13. Women also had the option for 3000 m, with Marta Mokaya (Oita Tomei H.S.) beating Ann Karindi (Toyota Jidoshokki) 8:56.40 to 8:59.12.

Kenyan Nicholas Kosimbei (Toyota) fronted the men's 5000 m A-heat in 13:33.97, with Kazuki Tamura (Sumitomo Denko) taking the top Japanese spot at 8th in 13:44.94. Guess which one of them organizers interviewed on the podium post-race. Former Komazawa University captain Tsuyoshi Ugachi (Konica Minolta) had his best race in a long time, easily winning the B-heat in 13:49.91 and duly announcing that he's ready to go back to the marathon.

Apart from the main distances, Abashiri also featured a series of national record shots at seldom-raced off distances. Yui Yabuta (Otsuka Seiyaku)  and Kosei Yamaguchi (Aisan Kogyo) went home with 2000 mSC national records in their pockets,  Yabuta winning the women's race in 6:30.68 and Yamaguchi the men's in 5:32.32. Ayako Jinnouchi (Kyudenko) and Kazuyoshi Tamogami (Chuo Univ.) each came up 2~3 seconds short in the women's and men's 1000 m, Jinnouchi taking 1st in  2:44.51 and Tamogami in 2:21.56.  Tatsuya Nishikubo (Waseda Univ.) missed the men's 600 m national record by just 0.29 seconds, winning in 1:17.03.

The Hokuren Distance Challenge series continues Saturday in Kitami. The entire meet will be streamed live on the JAAF site.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year.
