World Championships Marathons Pull in TV Viewership Ratings Over 13.5%

According to a report by Video Research Ltd., TBS' live broadcast of the Aug. 6 London World Championships men's and women's marathons recorded high TV viewership ratings. The men's marathon starting at 18:55 Japan time averaged a 13.7% viewership rating for its 135 minute broadcast. Beginning at 22:00 Japan time, the 150 minute women's marathon averaged 13.6%.

In the men's marathon civil servant runner Yuki Kawauchi (30, Saitama Pref. Gov't) missed top eight by just 3 seconds, finishing 9th. Mao Kiyota (23, Suzuki Hamamatsu AC) was the top Japanese woman at 16th. It was the first time in the 22 years since 1995 that no Japanese marathoners male or female made the top eight in a World Championships marathon.

Translator's note: Although the numbers are impressive, it's worth noting that the World Championships marathon ratings were a fraction of the normal viewership for the Jan. 2-3 Hakone Ekiden, where the two-day, roughly fifteen hour broadcast of the university men's road relay averages around 30% ratings.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters.
