Ishizuka and Yukinaga Break Junior and H.S. National Records on National High School Track and Field Championships Day Three

After setting a National High School Track and Field Championships record to win the girls' 400 m on Wednesday and anchoring her school's 4x100 m relay team, Haruko Ishizuka (Keiai Higashi Osaka Prep H.S.) tore it up again on the Championships' third day of competition.  After dominating the 400 m hurdles semifinals and her 800 m heat Ishizuka was sensational in the 400 mH final, kicking hard in the last 100 m to win in 57.06, a new junior national record, high school national record and meet record.  Her Keiai teammate Mizuki Murakami and 3rd-placer Yuri Arashima (Kurashiki Chuo H.S.) both ran PBs under 59 seconds but were nearly 2 second behind.  Incredibly, less than an hour later Ishizuka was back to win her 800 m semifinal in 2:08.65, the slowest of the three semifinal winning times but still credible given the dangerously hot conditions and, of course, the fact that she had just broken a junior national record.  1500 m champion Chika Mukai (Shigakukan H.S.) had the fastest time in the 800 m semifinals, 2:07.02, promising a great showdown in tomorrow's final.  The 2:02.23 junior national record may be a stretch, but with any luck Mukai and a rested Ishizuka will push each other to the 2:04.00 national high school record.

The other big news came in the boys' shot put, where favorite Shinichi Yukinaga (Seiko Gakuen H.S.) opened with a National High School Championships record throw of 17.87 m in the qualifying round.  On his second throw in the final Yukinaga broke the 18.02 m junior and high school national record with a throw of 18.04 m, coming back on his fifth throw to overtake both records again with a mark of 18.21 m.  Before this year's Championships Yukinaga was the only athlete in the field to have cleared 16.00 m, but in the final the 2nd through 4th placers all threw new bests over 16, a nice uptick in the quality of Japanese throwing.

The boys' 400 mH also saw a new National High School Championships record, with Kazunari Takada (Daini Hosei Prep H.S.) running a PB 50.27 to beat 2015 World Youth Championships silver and bronze medalists Ryusei Fujii (Kokura Kogyo H.S.) and Masaki Toyoda (Rakunan H.S.) for the win and the meet record.  Nanaka Kori (Keiai Higashi Osaka Prep H.S.) rounded out the day's record-breaking action with a meet record and PB 49.15 to win the girls' discus throw by nearly 8 m.  Tokyo H.S. took both the girls' and boys' 4x100 m relays, with its individual 100 m champions Iyoba Edoba and Kenta Oshima anchoring the teams to their wins.  World Youth Championships 100 m and 200 m gold medalist Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, outdone by Oshima in yesterday's 100 m final, anchored the Josai Prep H.S. team to a 6th-place finish in the boys' race.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. The same insulation material is installed across the entire ceiling, and the city plans to check for the extent of the possible flooding. Asked whether the arena will be re...

Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
