Weekend Track Roundup - Fujiwara, Ito, Jeilan, Kashiwabara, Sato and More

As road season got underway, three track time trials and one regional high school meet across Japan on Oct. 1 saw competitive action.

At the Chugoku Jitsugyodan Time Trials meet in Hiroshima, half-marathon national record holder Atsushi Sato (Team Chugoku Denryoku) ran his final tuneup for next weekend's Chicago Marathon, leading the 5000 m A-heat the entire way before being outkicked.  Sato finished 3rd in 14:05.76 with Masaki Sekido (Team NTT Nishi Nihon) taking the win in 13:59.27.  Kenta Otani (Team JFE Steel) was 2nd in a PB of 14:04.13 with his identical twin brother Keita Otani (Team JFE Steel) 5th in 14:07.54.  Daegu World Championships marathoner Mai Ito (Team Otsuka Seiyaku) returned to action with an easy win in the women's 5000 m in 16:24.07.  Hiroki Ishida (Team Mitsubishi Juko Nagasaki) took the 10000 m in 29:07.48, half a second up on teammate Taku Miyahara.

In Tokyo's western suburbs, Ethiopian Fekele Assefa (Team Kanebo) had an easy win over Aoyama Gakuin University ace Takehiro Deki, 13:56.65 to 14:04.30.  Fekele's countryman Ibrahim Jeilan (Team Honda) appeared on the track in Japan for the first time since winning the Daegu World Championships 10000 m gold medal and Africa Games 10000 m gold medal, pacing the Saitama Jitsugyodan Time Trials 10000 m A-heat for his Honda teammates.  2010 Tokyo Marathon winner Masakazu Fujiwara (Team Honda) benefited with a 28:54.29 for the win after having cancelled a planned run in last weekend's Berlin Marathon.  Along with Fujiwara, Hakone Ekiden star Ryuji Kashiwabara (Toyo University) ran his first race of the season, winning the 5000 m A-heat in 13:55.93.

Further north in Kitakami, Iwate, Kenyan Rosemary Wanjiru (Aomori Yamada H.S.) was the star of the Tohoku High School Newcomers meet as she set a new meet record of 9:12.98 to win the girls' 3000 m by more than 35 seconds.

Yuasa and Niiya Win Hokkaido Marathon, 6 Qualify for Olympic Trials

  Six more people picked up qualifying spots for next year's MGC Race at yesterday's Hokkaido Marathon in Sapporo, guaranteeing themselves places at Japan's 2028 Los Angeles Olympics marathon trials. In the men's race, Hibiki Yoshida tried to break away from the massive lead group at 30 km, opening a 25-second lead between there and 35 km before getting cut down by the chase trio of Jin Yuasa , Ken Tansho and Masato Arao . All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring. Monterey Welcomes Student-Athletes from Sister City Nanao, Japan

a press release by the Monterey-Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project photos here Fourteen student-athletes from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, recently completed a weeklong visit to the Monterey Peninsula as part of the Monterey–Nanao Cross Country Exchange Project , bringing together young people from the two Sister Cities through running, education, environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and friendship. The seven boys and seven girls from Nanao were paired with 14 members of the Monterey High School cross country team and stayed in their homes throughout the visit. The week marked the first half of a reciprocal exchange that will continue when the Monterey students travel to Nanao later this year. The visitors received their first introduction to Monterey shortly after arriving at Monterey High School, walking with their hosts to Sister City Park and gathering for photographs beside the sign honoring Nanao — a fitting beginning for a week devoted to bringin...
