Men's 200 m and 10000 m, Women's 5000 m and 10000 m Highlight National Track and Field Championships - Entry Lists

Rikuren has released the entry lists for this year's National Track and Field Championships, scheduled for June 10-12 in Kumagaya, Saitama. Among running events, the best races look set to be the men's 200 m and 10000 m and the women's 5000 m and 10000 m.

For men the 200 m features the largest number of athletes currently holding an eligible World Championships A-standard. Hitoshi Saito (Team Sanmesse) leads the way with a time of 20.42, followed by three others with low-20.5 marks. Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Shinji Takahira (Team Fujitsu) and 2010 World Jr. Champion Shota Iizuka (Chuo Univ.) are also in the field.

Last year Japan had nearly twice as many men under 28 minutes in the 10000 m as the United States. All seven of them are on the list for the men's 10000 m at Nationals, along with the two leading men of 2011, Tsuyoshi Ugachi (Team Konica Minolta) and Yuki Sato (Team Nissin Shokuhin), the last three national champions Yuki Iwai (Team Asahi Kasei), Kensuke Takezawa (Team S&B) and Takayuki Matsumiya (Team Konica Minolta), and top-ranked university runner Akinobu Murasawa (Tokai Univ.). All told ten men have valid World Championships B-standards, making for a competitive and potentially dramatic race.

The women's 10000 m is likewise likely to be one of the best of the meet, with four A-standard women led by a revitalized Kayoko Fukushi (Team Wacoal) who earlier this season ran her all-time second-fastest mark of 30:54.29, and collegiate 10000 m national record holder Hikari Yoshimoto (Bukkyo Univ.). World Championships marathon team members Yukiko Akaba (Team Hokuren) and Remi Nakazato (Team Daihatsu) are also on the list.

Although only three Japanese women in the 5000 m have run World Championships B-standard times within the current qualification window the lineup in that race is outstanding. Alongside #1-ranked Kenyan Ann Karindi (Team Toyota Jidoshokki) are national record holder Fukushi, 1500 m national record holder Yuriko Kobayashi (Team Toyota Jidoshokki), 2011's leading woman Hitomi Niiya (Chiba Pref.), 2009 national champion Yurika Nakamura (Team Tenmaya), 2010 collegiate national champion Kasumi Nishihara (Team Yamada Denki), 10000 m jr. national record holder Megumi Kinukawa (Team Mizuno), top university women Risa Takenaka (Ritsumeikan Univ.), Hikari Yoshimoto (Bukkyo Univ.) and Hanae Tanaka (Ritsumeikan Univ.), 2010 national 1500 m champion Mika Yoshikawa (Team Panasonic) and more.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
