Kashiwabara and Nishihara Headline Final Kyoto City Half Marathon

The final edition of the Kyoto City Half Marathon takes place Mar. 8, with an invited field of six athletes leading the way. Having become a national sensation with his stunning run in January's Hakone Ekiden, Ryuji Kashiwabara (Toyo Univ.) tops the list of four invited men, while National University Women's Ekiden anchor stage winner Kasumi Nishihara (Bukkyo Univ.) will run the women's race.

Kashiwabara set a new record on the Hakone Ekiden's legendary 5th stage while only a 1st-year, leading Toyo on to its first-ever Hakone win. All eyes will be focused upon him as he makes his half marathon debut. 2008 World Half Marathon national team member Kazuo Ietani (Team Sanyo Tokushu Seiko) is also in the field, as are Ietani's teammate Jun Shinoto, who set a new stage record on Hakone's 9th leg in 2008 before graduating from Chuo Gakuin University, and 3000 m steeplechase specialist Masatoshi Kikuchi (Team Fujitsu).

Nishihara made her half marathon debut in Kyoto last year, finishing 11th in 1:14:15. With subsequent achievements including a silver medal in last summer's Junior Asian Games 5000 m under her belt she will be looking for a significant improvement in her PB. Her main competition will be Team Panasonic's Kasumi Oyagi, who holds a PB of 1:13:25.

The 16th Kyoto City Half Marathon begins at 8:45 a.m. in front of Kyoto's Heianjingu shrine. With main sponsor Rohm having withdrawn its support due to the current recession, this year's edition of the race is its final running. Past winners have included marathon greats such as Khalid Khannouchi (Morocco/U.S.A.), Moses Tanui (Kenya) and Dionisio Ceron (Mexico) on the men's side and Elana Meyer (South Africa), Catherine Ndereba (Kenya), Fatuma Roba (Ethiopia) and Katrine Dorre (Germany). Kanoya Sports University's Koichiro Nagata set the national university half marathon record of 1:01:09 in winning Kyoto in 2001.

Nagoya Asian Games Test Event Canceled After Insulation Falls From Venue Ceiling

A section of insulation material fell from the ceiling of Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, the official venue for squash competition at September's Nagoya Asian Games. There were no injuries, but the city suspended use of the arena until its safety could be guaranteed, resulting in the cancelation of the Asian Games squash test event which was scheduled to have begun on May 14. It is not yet clear whether the arena will be usable for the Asian Games as planned. According to city officials, arena staff found that the insulation material had fallen onto a work walkway 13 m above the ground on the night of May 11. The fallen material was 3.6 m long, 50 cm wide and 2.5 km thick, and was found to be waterlogged. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is possible that it was caused by rainwater leaking in from the roof. Hakone Ekiden Qualifying Race Entry Roster Sizes Increased from 14 to 16

Hakone Ekiden organizers KGRR have announced details for the qualifying half marathon for next year's 103rd Hakone Ekiden. The Yosenkai qualifying race will be held Oct. 17 in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The combined times of the 10 fastest finishers from each participating team will be used for team scoring, with the 10 fastest teams going on the the main event next January and top-placing individuals from teams that do not qualify being names to the Kanto Region Student Alliance select team. One change from previous years is that the number of runners each school can enter has been increased from 14 to 16. Teams will still only be allowed to have from 10 to 12 athletes on the starting line, but the move gives coaches greater flexibility in making the final decision on their starting rosters. No changes have been made to the qualifying times of 34:00 for 10000 m or 1:13:00 for the half marathon, and the new earlier starting time of 8:30 a.m. introduced last year in an effort to mitigate ...
