Team Tokyo Denryoku announced on Oct. 4 that its head coach, 1991 World Championships marathon gold medalist Hiromi Taniguchi, will resign his position with the team. In explaining the move, Taniguchi, who turned 50 in April this year, commented, "I'd like to use my experience to help larger numbers of people." Representatives of the team thanked Taniguchi for his time with them, saying, "Please use your wisdom and abilities to help strengthen the Japanese distance runnning world." Taniguchi will now become a supervisor with the Tosupu Running company, doing consulting work related to running events and training facilities. He hopes to make work with the country's ever-growing numbers of amateur runners a priority.

Taniguchi's most well-known achievement was the marathon gold medal at the 1991 Tokyo World Championships. Following his retirement from competition he became coach of the Asahi Kasei running team, and later head coach of the Oki Denki women's team. In April, 2008 he took over as head of Team Tokyo Denryoku, leading it to two straight appearances at the New Year Ekiden national championships in 2009 and 2010.

All three stayed together until the very end, Yuasa showing the same kind of closing speed he had in winning 2025 Nobeoka Nishi Nippon Marathon and pulling away to win in 2:10:46. The debuting Tansho was next in 2:10:55, with Arao, 6th at last year's Sydney Marathon in an excellent 2:07:42, 3rd here in 2:10:59. By clearing 2:12:00 all three picked up MGC qualifying spots, freeing them up to go overseas next spring.
