Nishida and Fuchigami Gold - U20 Asian Championships Day Three

Day three of the 21st U20 Asian Athletics Championships in Dubai Friday delivered Japan's best single-day medal count so far, with two gold medals, a silver and four bronze. Breaking it down:

Yuri Nishida (Ritsumeikan Univ.) and Sari Kamei (Kyoto Kyoiku Univ.) brought A-game in the women's 800 m final. Nishida ran a PB 2:06.55 for gold over India's Sandilea Vinod by 0.55, with Kamei also running a PB of 2:07.56 for bronze.
Shota Fuchigami (Waseda Univ.) dominated in the men's 400 mH, running a PB 49.97 to win gold by almost 2 seconds over China's Cai Yuchen and Korean Kim Jeonghyun.
Rikuya Yoshida (Nittai Kashiwa H.S.) cleared 5.25 m for silver in the men's pole vault.
Yuki Hojo (Yoga T&F) held off Korea's Hwang Uichan by 0.04 for bronze in the men's 110 mH final, running 13.74 (+1.2) to Hwang's 13.78. Kyosuke Yamanaka (Hosei Univ.) was just out of the medals at 13.80 for 5th.
Miyabi Sono (Kokushikan Univ.) won bronze in the women's javelin throw with a 51.02 m on her final attempt that moved her past China's An Yutong and into the medals by 15 cm.
Kazuhiro Umeda (Nihon Univ.) hung on for bronze in the men's 10000 m race walk after falling off the leaders early, finishing almost 7 minutes back in 49:38.93.

The women's hammer throw was the only final with a Japanese athlete in it that didn't produce a medal. Mimi Shimamoto (Kyushu Kyoritsu Univ.) finished last among the 7 finalists with a 54.92 m best on her fourth attempt, a little over 6 m outside the medals.

In qualifying rounds:

Anna Matsuda (Nagasaki Nichidai H.S.) led her 100 mH heat in 13.43 (+1.7), while Tenka Taninaka (Oita Oginodai H.S.) took 2nd in her heat in 13.68 (+2.7), both going on to the final.
The Japanese men's 4x100 m team of Yamanaka, Fuchigami, Kaito Kuroki (Chuo Univ.) and Kai Hirasawa (Fukuoka Univ.) made the final, placing 3rd in their heat in 40.80.

According to investigators, two-time Olympic marathon medalist Erick Wainaina has had his case referred to prosecutors after allegedly injuring a railway employee by striking him in the face at a station in Setagaya, Tokyo. Wainaina, 50, was the bronze medalist in the marathon at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and won silver in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Wainaina is suspected of assaulting a woman in her late teens and a male Tokyo Denentoshi Line employee by hitting them in the face during an altercation at Komazawa University Station in March this year, resulting in minor injuries to the man's face. According to investigators, the incident began on the train between Wainaina and the woman, and after getting off at Komazawa University Station he hit her in the face when she asked him to go to the station office with her to report it. Japan's best college meet kicked off Thursday at Tokyo's National Stadium at the 103rd Kanto Region University Track and Field Championships .
